LOBOS MARK 13TH STRAIGHT WIN OVER MAVS
MARSHALL - JaMycal Hasty put up over 250 yards on the ground, providing the spark that propelled the Longview Lobos to their 13th-straight win over the Marshall Mavericks Friday at Maverick Stadium.

It was a spark the Lobos needed from the very beginning in the 103rd meeting between the two rivals.

A bad Lobo snap on the first play of the contest gave Marshall the ball inside the Lobo 10 yard line. Two plays later, the Mavericks snapped an 11 quarter scoreless streak against the Lobos, taking a lead they would hold until the waning minutes of the opening half.

Enter Hasty.

Pinned inside their own 10-yard line, Hasty broke off a 62-yard run blast down the sideline, setting up a score two plays later from Jeremy Powell and kicking off a string of 20 unanswered points for Longview en route to a 26-14 win over Marshall at Maverick Stadium.

"The offense was out of sync all night until JaMycal had the big run and we started putting some things together," Longview head coach John King said. "Sometimes it takes those kind of plays to get them fired up."

But Marshall wasn't finished just yet.

After Hasty punched in his second touchdown of the night to start the fourth quarter, Marshall fired right back with an eight-play, 60-yard scoring march to pull within a score with 8:43 left to play.

"This is how it is every year, Marshall came out and got after it," King said. "They were excited to playing, made some big plays and had a chance to win it until the very end."

Hasty finished with 252 yards on 23 carries and a pair of touchdowns. Powell chipped in 29 yards with scoring blasts of 15 and five yards.

"JaMycal had a big performance tonight and he had a lot of help," King said. "The line blocked well, the receivers blocked well.

"It was one of those nights where he had the hot hand."

Jaylon Mitchell scooped up the ball on the bad snap for Marshall, setting up a Jaueque Kuykendall touchdown on fourth down to give the Mavericks a quick 7-0 lead.

"Our defense responded in a big way right there, holding them to fourth down inside the 10," King said. "If they would've kept them out of the end zone, who knows what would've happened tonight."

A pair of missed field goals and two big penalties - one that negated a 37-yard touchdown and another that erased a 50-yard-plus punt return - gave Marshall the lead until Hasty's 62-yard run set up Powell's 15-yard scoring run with 1:59 left until the break.

Longview put together its largest drive of the night on the first possession in the second half, marching 80 yards on 14 plays, capped with a four-yard touchdown run from Hasty, his first of the night and first of the 2013 season.

He would return to paydirt six snaps later and the Lobo defense held Marshall to a quick three-and-out.

Marshall marched 60 yards on eight plays to pull within a touchdown on a four-yard run from Mitchell Leonard.

Lobo quarterback Dezmond Chumley found Jordan Whitaker for 32 yards and Marquies Hunter trucked for a 12-yard pickup on third down to set up Powell's second touchdown of the night from five yards out to give Longview a 26-14 lead.

After a successful reverse and a 20-yard completion, Laurent Johnson snatched his first interception of the year with 3:11 to play. Travin Howard also pulled down a Marshall pass with under a minute remaining.

Marshall and Longview will compete in the Battle on the Border series next Saturday at Independence Bowl in Shreveport.
