LOBOS FLEX MUSCLES IN 56-13 WIN OVER MAVS
LONGVIEW - It took a little less than three minutes for the Lobos to build a 14-0 on Friday night.

They did so following a script that's worked well for the Lobos through three games of district play.

The Lobo offense scored on its initial drive for the sixth time this season and the defense followed suit with a play as Longview jumped ahead early and rolled to a 56-13 win over Marshall in District 15-5A action Friday night at Lobo Stadium.

The win - Longview's fourth-straight - puts the Lobos at 4-2 on the season and 3-0 in district action.

"Another quick start for us tonight," Longview head coach John King said. "We got good field position and scored quick then a defensive touchdown and it's quickly 14-0.

"We kind of rocked them back on their heels and the kids fed off of it."

Tylan Miller quickly showed the night he had coming with 44 yards on the Lobos first drive, capping it with an eight-yard score. Miller - who was selected as the Great American Rivalry Series MVP - finished the night with 107 yards on the ground with three scores and added an 18-yard touchdown pass.

Marquies Hunter led the way with 108 yards for Longview - 80 of that total coming in the third quarter as Longview rolled up 292 yards on the ground.

"They gave us fits from time to time but we were able to pick up some big plays, convert some third and longs and completed some good throws," King said. "We got settled in and were able to run the ball effectively after that."

Dezmond Chumley was efficient, starting 6-for-7 on the night. He finished 7-for-11 with 129 yards. As a whole the Lobos rushed the ball 42 times and threw the ball 14 times - just three times in the second half.

The Lobo defense was shutdown from the beginning and held Marshall to 211 yards of total offense - a large chunk coming of 42, 48 and 69 yard gains.

"We swarmed the ball tonight," King said. "The defensive line was very disruptive and we fit well out of the secondary."

Ameron Dean had his second interception in as many games. Jakoryian Walker pulled down his third pick of the year and Keenan Madden added his second.

Longview opened the contest with a four-play, 61-yard march with Miller taking the eight-yard touchdown in just 53 seconds into the contest.

The Lobo defense held Marshall to a quick three-and-out. Pinned at their own 15, the snap on a punt attempt sailed into the end zone and Madden was there to jump on it to push the Lobos lead to 14-0 at the 9:01 mark in the first quarter.

A Lobo penalty gave Marshall a first down but the Lobo defense buckled down again, forcing the Mavericks to punt.

Eight plays and 68 yards later the Lobo offense was in the end zone again with Miller punching in his second score of the night from one yard away. Chumley found Antonio Carter for 21 yards on a third and 10 in the scoring drive. Carter finished with five catches for 86 yards.

On the ensuing drive, Dean pulled down the first of three Maverick interceptions in the first half. The second quarter opened with Longview facing 3rd and 11 at the Marshall 18. The Lobos hit Marshall with trickery as Miller found Carter for an 18-yard touchdown to send Longview to halftime with a 28-0 lead.

Marshall opened the second half with a quick drive of their own, going 82 yards on three plays with Chavis Mills putting the Mavericks on the board with a 42-yard scoring run.

Hunter accounted for 44 yards as Longview marched right back down the field on eight plays to make it 35-6 Lobos with 7:58 left in the third quarter.

Chumley closed out his night with a one-yard touchdown run. Cameron Castleberry called his own number on an option keeper for a 10-yard score as Longview built a 49-6 lead with 10:02 left in the contest.

Marshall quarterback Justin Hart found John Love, who broke off a 60-yard run for the Mavericks' second touchdown with just over eight minutes to play.

Michael Ross rounded out the Lobo scoring with a seven-yard score - the third Lobo quarterback to score on the night - for the 56-13 final.

Longview travels to Texas High next while Marshall visits Greenville.
