| LONGVIEW - Longview brought a revolving door of players offensively on Friday night in the 107th meeting with the Marshall Mavericks.
Meanwhile, the Lobo defense remained steady. With that strong showing from the defense, Longview scored 41 unanswered points en route to a 41-7 win over the Mavericks, improving the Lobos to 2-0 on the season. Jessie Anderson scored twice, totaling 82 yards, and was one of seven ball carriers for the Lobos, who rushed for 285 yards in the win. Anderson was selected as MVP of the game, which was part of the Great American Rivalry Series. "Everyone got their touches and we've got a good stable of backs that are good compliments to one another," Longview head coach John King said. "I think we got good nights out of Paul Hutchins and Jason Roundtree at fullback." Longview continued to roll its three quarterbacks into action with all three, starter A'Darius Carter, Jordan Lawson and Haynes King all seeing action. Lawson threw the Lobos' lone passing touchdown. Carter made a key pass to set up his short touchdown run. King, who saw spot time at quarterback, hauled in a key 40-yard pass that set up a Lobo touchdown. Chris Kessler, who was honored as the Great American Rivalry Series scholarship athlete pregame, added two field goals in the first half as the Lobo offense gained traction. Kessler also connected on two 49-yard punts, added two touchbacks and two tackles on kickoff return coverage. Meanwhile, Longview's defense held Marshall (0-2) to a 2.8 yards per carry mark. Maverick starting quarterback JJ Green, a Sophomore, went 11-for-22 through the air for 154 yards. While the final score was in the Lobos' favor, Longview held on to a 20-7 lead halfway through the third quarter with a pair of fumbles gifted to the Mavericks. "It's 20-7 at halftime and we come out with back-to-back fumbles," King said." The defense responds again and we hit Jaylin (Brown) for the long score. "We were able to take a small breath with it being 27-7." Each time, however, the Lobo defense fit the bill, holding Marshall to less than 40 yards in four possessions following Marshall's first and only score. Jephaniah Lister had an interception and the Lobo defensive line, using a host of contributors shut down the run and kept Green on his toes. Marshall finished with three three-and-outs and three turnovers on downs. Rounding out the Lobo offense was fullback Paul Hutchins, who picked up 66 yards on eight carries. Jason Roundtree had 74 yards on three touches and Jaquan Edwards had 39 yards, including a six-yard touchdown. Jaylin Brown was on the receiving end of Lawson's touchdown pass, a wide open 67-yard score for the tight end. Lawson finished the night 5-for-8 for 132 yards. After exchanging punts to start, Green connected with Tahj Washington for a 40-yard touchdown pass on third-and-seven to put Marshall ahead, 7-0. That would be the only time Marshall found the end zone. After Keilyn Williams, who had three carries for 33 yards on the night, scooped up a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and returning it 35 yards, Anderson's first touch went 45 yards up the middle for a touchdown and a 7-7 game. After consecutive drives that resulted in Kessler's two field goals, Anderson scored his second touchdown on a one-yard jaunt, set up by King's 40-yard catch for a 20-7 Longview lead at halftime. Longview's opening drive of the second half ended with a fumble before the defense added a stop at the plus-39. Brown's catch then made it 27-7. Longview hosts Dallas South Oak Cliff on Friday while Marshall hosts Shadow Creek. |
