LONGVIEW BLOWS PAST WEST MESQUITE, 43-0
MESQUITE - Longview traveled to Mesquite Memorial Stadium for the 2023 District 7-5A Division I finale against West Mesquite, and rolled to a 43-0 victory before next Friday's playoff opener.

The Lobos finished the regular season with a 9-1 record and a 7-0 district record, and will host Porter at Lobo Stadium at a time to be determined next week.

Their bi-district playoff opponent will ultimately be the fourth seed from District 8-5A Division I after the three-way tie for second place is split up.

The Wranglers, meanwhile, wrapped up their year with respective 3-7 and 1-6 marks.

"We came out and took care of business," said Longview athletic director and head football coach John King. "I thought our kids played well."

Longview started the game with a bang because Mason Washington's 51-yard touchdown run made it a 7-0 road team advantage at the 6:10 mark of the first quarter.

Taylor Tatum's 14-yard carry and Kelvin Washington's 17-yard carry on the team's second drive of the night set up Tatum's two-yard touchdown run and a 14-0 lead at the 11:55 mark of the second period.

Mason Washington finished the night with 75 rushing yards and one touchdown, Kelvin Washington earned 64 rushing yards and one touchdown, and Tatum scored twice on 32 rushing yards.

Longview's defense kept West Mesquite off the scoreboard throughout the game, and Thomas Roel intercepted Demetris Ballard passes at the 8:26 and 3:46 marks of the second quarter.

Tatum made the most of the second forced turnover because his one-yard touchdown run expanded Longview's lead to 21-0 with 1:57 remaining until halftime.

Longview launched the second half the same way it ended the first half. The Lobos started the first drive of the third quarter at the West Mesquite 27-yard line after a long kickoff return. Kelvin Washington's 25-yard run and eventual two-yard touchdown carry made it a 28-0 score at the 10:54 mark of the period.

The Lobos' lead grew to 30-0 when West Mesquite punter Nestor Leon kicked the ball out of his team's own end zone at the 3:18 mark of the third quarter.

Ethan Harrison was then handed the ball on an 18-yard touchdown run, but Longview's missed extra point attempt kept the score at 36-0 with 14 seconds remaining in the period.

Maverick Rowe filled in for normal starting quarterback Andrew Tutt and made the most of his start. He completed 10 of his 15 pass attempts in the game for 208 yards and a touchdown. His 61-yard scoring strike to Da'Morrion Williams expanded Longview's lead to 43-0 with 5:30 to play in the fourth quarter.

Rowe also connected with Dakaylen Reese two times for 76 yards.
