MARSHALL WINS FOOTBALL CLASSIC 31 TO 0
MARSHALL - Playing erratic football, the Marshall High School Mavericks defeated the Longview High Loboes 31 to 0 beneath the white lights of the Fair Park stadium Monday night, demonstrating again and again their inability to penetrate the Lobo forward line.

The Mavericks, regarded as one of the most powerful Class A teams in their district, scored once in the first, second and final periods and twice in the third.

The Loboes put up a much harder fight than was indicted by the score. Bad breaks that came when they were in a position to scow accounted to a great extent for their failure to chalk up a marker.

The Mavericks did anything with the Lobo line. They made their gains at end and by the aerial route. Jimmy Millers, former Lobo star, stepped off a number of long gains for the Marshall herd, as did Bradlack, Blackburn, Irvine and captain Weidman. The only feature of the game was Hadlock's 41-yard return of a punt which led to a Mavericks touchdown.

Jimmy Mills of Marshall received McFarland's kickoff and returned 10 yards and then stepped off 18 yards before being downed by Grimes. haddock gained seven yards and Marshall was forced to kick. Another exchange of punts gave Marshall a break and a touchdown. Adams fumbled Weidman's punt on his own 6 yard line and the ball went over. Weidman scored the touchdown and kicked the extra point.

The remainder of the quarter saw two other opportunities for Marshall but they proved only opportunities. Mills stepped around right end for 28 yards but the Mavs were held for downs. Mills intercepted a pass as the quarter ended.

The Mavericks were again held and McFarland kicked to the center of the field. Then came a break and a counter break for the Loboes. Harris blocked Weidman's punt and recovered on Marshall's 39-yard line. After Milton had gained four yards, McFarland passed to Grimes for 20 yards but the play was recalled and the Loboes penalized 15 yards for the clipping.

After several exchanges the Mavericks started a touchdown drive from their own 36 yard line. Weidman passed to Listen for 16 yards. Blackburn went around right end and for six yards. Irvine stepped off 15 yards, fumbled but the ball was recovered by Listen. Blackburn gained a couple of yards. Hadlock added four more and then walked around right end for 15 yards to place the ball on the two yard line. From this position, Hadlock hit counter or a marker. Weidman failed at the extra point and the half ended with the score: Marshall 13, Longview 0.

After drawing a 20-yard penalty Irvine stated the fun with 20 yards on a fake play. The drive, once started, continued with 26 yards picked up by Mills, tow short passes from Weidman to Irvine and then a touchdown toss from Weidman to Listen. Mills failed to kick extra point.

After getting deep into Marshall territory by a 20 yard run by Milton and a 12 yard pass by McFarland to Grimes, and a desperate passing attack being blocked, McFarland attempted to score on the Mavericks by a field goal but failed.

The next Maverick drive started with two passes. Weidman to Blackburn for 15 yards and Weidman to Listen for 30 yards. Mills made two shot end runs an then shook off four tacklers to cross over for a touchdown. Mills failed to kick goal.

The Mavericks got started again in the final period after Mills stepped out for 22 yards but were halted when McFarland intercepted a pass. The final Maverick touchdown came after Hadlock returned a kick for 41 yards. Hadlock then skirted end for 14 yards. Weidman passed to Agnor for another 14 and Hadlock went over fro the marker. Hadlock's try for extra point was blocked.

The game ended with the score: Marshall 31, Longview 0.
