LOBOS PROVE SUPERIORITY OVER MARSHALL WITH 19-7 WIN
MARSHALL - Displaying the class of football that has carried them undefeated and untied all season, the Longview Lobos were content to score a 19-to-6 victory here Friday afternoon over the Marshall Mavericks in the District 9 chase.

The victory virtually gave the Lobos the district title, since they only have to face the oft-beaten Gladewater Bears on Thanksgiving Day before they clinch the crown.

The fancy blocking that has been exhibited all season by the Longview crew was not entirely lacking but it was partially checked, It worked at times, once to aid the flashy Dick Miller, brilliant young halfback, to make his longest broken field run - a 94-yard touchdown sprint after intercepting a Marshall pass.

It was in the middle of the first quarter before either team scored, although Newton of the Mavericks came off right tackle with a brilliant 26-yard run, advancing the ball to the Longview 35-yard stripe.

From inside Longview territory, the Mavericks were forced to kick the ball and after Longview had received the oval on their own 8-yard stripe, the Lobos started a drive down the field 92 yards that netted them a touchdown.

The drive was climaxed by a 9-yard pass, LeBus to Cantrell, that was good for a score. Cantrell's kick was good for the extra point.

Just before the quarter ended Coleman of Marshall staged a beautiful 25-yard run at left end, and after an exchange of punts, Newton, also of Marshall, ran the ball 36 yards off right tackle to the Longview 39, but the Mavs were unable to gain and were forced to kick.

With but three minutes left to play in the second quarter, Longview received a Marshall punt and marched it up the field, the final rally being good for a score. A 12-yard pass from Cantrell to Burandt after Cantrell had taken the ball from Dick Miller, and then Burandt's 32-yard sprint, untouched, for the goal line being perfect, Cantrell failed to convert.

Starting off the second half, Jack tittle, flashy Marshall quarterback, ran the ball back 52 yards, even after fumbling it to the Longview 38, but only a few plays later and a couple of exchange of punts, Dick Miller intercepted one of Marshall's passes thrown by E. Wood and weaved his way down the field in the manner that has made him the outstanding broken-field runner of all time in East Texas. He ran it back 94 yards.

The Lobos missed another touchdown when Miller passed 15 yards to Burandt, but the end, who played a stellar game throughout, juggled the ball when he had a clear field.

Marshall's tally came in the fourth quarter when captain Jelly Whitehurst blocked a LeBus punt. Paul Wood picked it up on the 10 yard line and sprinted across the final stripe. Eugene Wood's kick for the extra point failed.

By this time, Longview's lineup was dotted with substitutes but like Tyler the week before, the Marshall team was whipped down and was unable to score successive drives.
