LOBOS SMOTHER MAVS 40-12 AND REGAIN LEAD
LONGVIEW - Longview's Lobos bounced back into the District 11 picture here yesterday by outclassing Marshall's Mavericks 40 to 12 to move into a tie for the top position with Tyler's Lions. The Lions beat Kilgore, leader until today, 13 to 6 in Tyler to remove the Bulldogs from the title picture.

Big Don Fambrough, captain of the Lobos, led the way by scoring five touchdowns and kicking four conversions for 34 points himself. He also rolled up the amazing total of 132 personal yards from scrimmage and another 68 on completed passes.

After a scoreless first period, the Wolves went on the prowl, in the second heat. Fambrough capped a 66 yard drive with a 13 yard jag through center for the first touchdown and converted. Scott turned in a 53 yard run to the Marshall 15 late in the half an Fambrough ran to the one foot left before he was blocked out. He then crashed over center for the touchdown for a 13-0 halftime lead.

Marshall opened up with a passing attack early in the third period and several interceptions cost them points. They drove into Longview territory after receiving the kickoff, then kicked to Scott next the goal line. He returned to own his 13. A few plays later, Scott passed to Murray for 26 yards to Marshall's 48 and Fambrough got 19 around left end. Fambrough then cracked the center of the line and outran the secondary to score. He converted for a 20-0 lead.

Immediately after the succeeding kickoff to Marshall, Warren's pass was intercepted by Goodson, Lobo center, who returned it about 15 yards to the Maverick 17 where he ran into three of his own mates. Four plays later Fambrough carried it over from the four for a touchdown and converted to run the count to 27-0.

The Mavericks, aided by a 30-yard half-the-distance penalty that put the ball on the Lobo 30, threatened a few minutes later but Scott intercepted a Warren aerial on his own five and went to the 21. From the 38 he passed 20 to Murray, who galloped another 42 for a score, and Fambrough converted again for a 34-0 lead.

Early in the fourth the Mavericks connected with a beautiful pass, Warren to Bibb, that gained 52 yards and a touchdown. Warren's conversion failed.

Then Hanson blocked Scott's kick and recovered on Longview's 29. Warren passed to Hall for 28 and warren carried it over from the one.

A wobbly pass that Scott got off hurriedly in the fading minutes was gathered in by Fambrough on the Lobo 34 and he dodged 66 more yards for a touchdown, the entire play netting 68 yards. Fambrough failed to convert and left the score at 40-12.

The Lobos' aerial clicked eight times for 213 yards, more than the entire Maverick team made. The Lobo ground attack gained another 248 yards.

Although held on about even terms with the inspired Mavericks through the first period, the Lobos' superiority began to show itself early in the second. From there on it was never even a battle.

Fambrough ran beautifully, burrowing his way for good gains on straight power plays and mixing in some pretty neat change-of-pace and fancy stepping also. And on several occasions he shoed the Mavericks a devastating straight arm, notably to dispose of the last man remaining between him and his last touchdown.

Scott's passing was terrific and he got some beautiful help from his receivers. Howard McDonald pulled the fanciest catch of the year when he leaped high into he air to drag the oval down with his left hand, then lateraled to Fambrough, but the whole play was nullified when the Wolves were penalized for clipping on the play.

The whole Lobo line looked good with their blocking, giving Scott plenty of time to pass and opening wide holes for the runners,. Bivines looked good on reverse plays and played good defensively.

Steve Warren, pint-sized Maverick quarterback, showed the Lobos something in the way of passing. He flung 28 aerials and found his mark with 16 of them, although four went awry and into Lobo hands for interceptions. The completions gain 144 yard, about all the Mavs made. Their ground attack was held to 39 yards net.
