MAVERICK VICTORY TO BE DISCUSSED FOR A LONG TIME
MARSHALL - The 11-2A football classic which was unfolded at Maverick Stadium Friday afternoon between the Marshall and Longview teams will no doubt by discussed pro and con for months to come before local ball fans are willing to let it die a natural death.

Judging by the way they operated in the second half, when they cut their total of fumbles down from four to one, the Green and White looked like the stronger team in almost every department. Still, the Mavericks were playing heads up ball and tackling with a viciousness seldom displayed on a high school grid - and there is no denying they deserved the victory.

Still others will swear that Longview should have thrown more passes - for it was evident that the Marshall defense was rather impotent against an aerial attack. When Dill connected with Algee Callahan to set up the first score, the Maverick weakness was very apparent.

One of the two really shining lights on the Lobo squad was Joltin' Joe Young, who lived up to his raves for district recognition by scoring the Longview touchdown, and averaging 68 yards on his kicks. There is hardly a college player in the country who has come out of a ball game with that astounding of an average. His best try for the day was an 81-yard boot - which traveled 61 yards actually - if you want to count it from the place where it was kicked.

Heads and shoulders above any lineman on the field was Longview's candidate for all-state honors, right guard Bobby Collier. The 190 pound line ace was in on 90 per cent of the tackles made by the Green and White.

Never before this season has the Lobo team fumbled the way they did in Marshall Friday. Almost every one of the Longview backs were guilty of dropping the ball on at least one occasion with the possible exception of Wesley Sullivan.

The defending champs, playing without their star fullback Billy Dickle, were an inspired eleven. Bordering on over-confidence during the midway practice sessions, the loss of Dickle sobered them up to the fact they would have to go all out to win, and they did just that.

Gahlen Dinkle, 14 year old brother of the Maverick ace, replaced his famed brother and played a good game. He account for one of the Marshall scores, and handled the kicking chores for the Harrison county team.

In all, it was a game which was a tough one to lose, and great to win. The Mavericks have just about sewed up the district championship for another year, and they will meet Lufkin in the playoffs following the regular season.

Longview will journey to Gladewater Thursday afternoon to battle hapless Gladewater in the season finale.
