LAST QUARTER PASS GIVES LOBOS VICTORY
MARSHALL - The Longview Lobos took advantage to eke out a thrilling 6-0 victory over an inspired Marshall eleven which pushed the Lobos all over the field but were unable to score. A dramatic last quarter pass from Red "Sling Shot" Stuckey to Ed Roach gave Longview its margin of victory with only three minutes remaining in the East Texas classic which was played before 6,800 fans in rain-soaked Maverick Stadium Friday afternoon.

At the very moment when even the most optimistic fans in the arena were willing to concede that the teams would gain a scoreless tie at best, the Lobos passing attack clicked fro the game-winning touchdown which shattered Marshall's hope for an upset victory. The triumph clinched the District 11-AA title for the Green and White and earned them the right to meet the high-flying Lufkin Panthers in the bi-district game later in the year.

Marshall came closer to the Longview goal line than any other team this year. On two occasions the Maroon-clad warriors knocked on the door of opportunity, but they reckoned without the defensive ability of a Longview team which has refused to allow a touchdown this season. The Mavs started their first drive toward the Lobo goal line late in the initial quarter after taking a Jimmy Pakenham quick kick on their own 42-yard line.

Elmer "Bubba" Field sparked a ground attack which carried directly to the Longview 16-yard line in 10 plays as the quarter ended. Highlights of the march were nine, six and four-yard dashes by Field, who was one of the best men Longview has faced this year.

Field opened the second quarter by completing a bullet pass to Carroll Holiday which gave the Mavs a first down on Longview's 11-yard stripe. The famed Gahlen Dinkle made his first appearance in the ball game at this point and took the pass from center. The fleet-footed Dinkle started wide around his own left end and as he swung out to evade the onrushing Buddy Terry, the star halfback stepped into a soft spot in the turf and slipped to the ground. The play cost Marshall five yards and set them back on their own 16.

Realizing that his only chance for a score was through the air, Field tossed a pass intended for the 6'4 Holiday in the end zone, but 5'8 Donnie Barton intercepted the aerial on his own two-yard line and drifted to the seven before Holiday grabbed him from behind. Pakenham, who was kicking beautifully all afternoon, kicked on first down to keep the Lobos out of danger.

The remainder of the second quarter was highlighted by the terrific defensive play of Don Menasco, Pakenham and Buddy Terry. Both teams engaged in a kicking duel until the end of the half, with Pakenham enjoying a slight edge over the ever threatening Bubba Field. The half ended with Marshall in possession of the ball on their own 31-yard line.

Marshall kicked off to start the second and Barton returned from his own 20 to the 27. Fox Cashell hit guard for five, then a bad pass from center hit Cashell's shoulder and rolled back to the Longview 25 where Fox recovered. Pakenham got off a lazy spiral which Field gathered in on his own 30 and returned ti 21 yards through a broken field to the Lobo 49, where Jimmy Eaves and Algie Callahan pushed him out of bounds.

Menasco tossed Field for a two-yard loss, then Jim Barton bucked the line for six. Another Barton plunge netted a yard and Field kicked to Serpass on the Lobo 33, with Serpass returning two yards. Castle was thrown back to the 10 and Pakenahm kicked to Barton on Longview's 44. Ed Roach stopped the Mav safety man dead in his tracks.

Terry and Eaves were all over Field on the first play from scrimmage and succeeded in tossing the pesky runner for and eight-yard loss. Field passed on the next play and Serpass intercepted on his own 39and raced brilliantly downfield to Marshall's 21-yard line before he was tossed out of bounds by "Bull" Yates. The play was nullified on the 27 where Longview was guilty of clipping and the ball was put in play on the Mav 42 in Longview's possession. Now the fans were screaming for Longview to make its bid for a score, but Cashell was smeared as he attempted to pass, fumbled and Marshall recovered 15 yards back of the line of scrimmage on the Lobo 43.

With less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Mavs uncorked a steam roller offense which saw them blast their way down to the Longview eight yard marker. J. Barton carried to the 38 in two tries at the line an Dinkle picked up a first down on the 31. Tow plunges by Dinkle netted three yards, then Field passed to Holiday for a first on the Lobo 17. Dinkle was stopped by Menasco on the 15 and Barton bulled his way down to the 10 and Dinkle carried to the eight a moment later.

The crowd had gone completely wild at this point, with the partisan Maverick rooters yelling for a touchdown and the worried Longview backers screaming for the Lobos to "hold that line." Marshall needed only one yard for a firs down on the Longview seven yard line. Longview moved into a seven man line and the Green-Clad forwards dug in to await the thrust through the middle which everyone knew Dinkle would attempt. Hill snapped the ball to Dinkle and the chunky back fired into the middle of the Lobo wall, but Fuller, Eaves and Menasco were waiting for him and when the pile was uncovered the ball was six inches short of the mark as Longview took over on downs.

Once more it was sensational punting by Pakenham which saved Longview's hide. Standing in his own end zone, Joltin' Jimmy boomed a 53-yard punt upfield to the Mav 38, where i was taken by Dinkle. The Mav ace was dropped after returning the leather seven yards by Buddy Terry who was playing that end position as its never been played since the days of Otto Paul Burandt. That play ended the third quarter.

Two plays later, Bubba Field shot a pass intended for Holiday on the Lobo 45, but Don Menasco - the all-stater in every sense of the word - hurried into the way of the pass and returned it to the Mav 26, where he was forced out of bounds by three Marshall defenders. Referee Jimmy Higgins ruled that Don stepped out of bounds on the 35, however, and the ball was put in play at that point. Pakenham hit off tackle for five but Don Barton was tossed for a six-yard deficit. An incomplete pass brought up fourth down and Pakenahm kicked out of bounds on the 19.

When three running plays lost five yards, Field returned the punt to the Longview 46 where Amy Rogers ran it back to the Mav 45. Pakenham picked up three, then added five more but Stuckey lost two on third down. This set the stage fore the turning point of the game, as Pakenham went back to kick and angled a 35-yarder out of bounds on the Marshall five-yard marker. Field, standing in his own end zone, was hurried by Terry and Roach as he attempted to kick on first down and his punt died on the Marshall 27.

Pakenham immediately hit the line for five yards and Serpass picked up two on a reverse off tackle. Stuckey attempted to hit Barton with a pass, but overshot the mark.

Realizing that it was now or never, Pakenham called for a pass and Stuckey obliged by fading back calmly and pitching a perfect strike to Roach who was standing on the 10. The rugged wingman was hit immediately by two Marshall defenders, but he refused to go down. Instead he shook loose from their grasp, whirled his way to the five, bumped into Dinkle and raced over the goal line standing up!

The cheer which followed that play will ring in the ears of this writer for many years. Everything broke loose at once as the fans were completely hysterical and the Lobo players started doing double flips in the end zone. The fact that Cashell missed the extra point was forgotten in the pandemonium which continued for the remainder of the game.

Marshall came back fighting, but they never had a chance. They carried down to the Longview 3 late in the game, but a promising kid by the name of Pat Collier broke up the rally by smearing Dinkle for a 12-yard loss on the next to last play of the game.

As was mentioned yesterday, Algie Callahan suffered a severe knee injury which wound up his high school football career. The loss of the giant tackle puts Longview in a deep hole with the Lufkin game approaching, but an unheralded youngster named Bob Muston was playing bang up ball in Callahan's place out there Friday.
