SPEEDY LOBOS OUTSCORE HUSTLING MAVS, 27-18
LONGVIEW - The quick-hitting Longview Lobos and Marshall Mavericks exchanged touchdowns for three quarters here Thursday afternoon, but the Wolves broke loose for a pair in the fourth quarter to take a 27-18 last-game victory.

Marshall had a chance for a victory until the final two minutes when the Lobos finally pushed over a touchdown to clinch the annual District 4-AAA grudge battle.

The Mavericks controlled the ball in an effort to pull out a victory and tie for fourth place in the final standings, but the Lobos struck too quickly when they had possession of the pigskin. The Mavs ran 62 plays from scrimmage to only 40 for the Lobos, yet they managed to hold the edge in rushing and passing yards.

It was the final game of the season for 15 Mavericks, with virtually the entire line playing for the Red and White for the last time.

Coach Charlie Flowers' crew started the game like it meant business, driving 43 yards for a touchdown the second time it got the ball. Longview took the opening kickoff and ran three plays and punted. Marshall picked up eight yards in three running tries and then Don Carpenter booted 35 yards to Tony Rothrock who fumbled and Mickey Maudlin fell on the pigskin for the Mavs on the Lobo 43.

Bushe Morgan and Jimmy Webb got four yards on two line smashes and Jon Casey carried through the middle for two and a first down. Hobo Jones, Webb and Mauldin got another first down to the 20 on three line bucks.

Webb then took a pitchout around right end, then shook off two tacklers on the 15, tight-walked the sidelines for five yards and then cut away from two tacklers on the five to tumble into the end zone for at touchdown. Bushe Morgan missed his first of three extra point attempts and Marshall led 6-0 with two minutes of playing time gone.

Longview went ahead to stay with 10 seconds left in the first quarter when they drove 50 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. A 16-yard pass from Bobby Randel to Chuck Brown and a 13-yard scamper by Dub Thomas were the big ground gainers. Roy Taylor thundered over left guard from two yards out to score standing up. Randel booted the extra point and the Lobos went ahead, 7-6.

There were no scores in the second period.

Three plays deep in the third stanza, the Lobos starts another touchdown drive after Carpenter punted 31 yards and Rothrock returned it to the Mav 30. Randel hit Taylor with a 26-yard too and in three line smashes Thomas leaped over right tackle from the one-foot line. Randel kicked the point and it was 14-6.

With Glen Liston engineering a junior, Sophomore - laden line up, the Mavericks drove 73 yards in 13 plays for at touchdown. The payoff came on a tricky pass-lateral fromListon to Jim Carmichael who lateraled on the 13 to Morgan he stepped over untouched. The play carried 17 yards. Two and one-half minutes remained in the third period and the Mavs trailed 14-12.

Longview took the ensuing kickoff and traveled 65 yards in nine plays to score. Thomas reeled off 18 yards over tackle and the payoff came when he hit the left side again and tagged, stumbled and ran over the entire secondary on a beautiful 16-yard run. Randel's kick was wide and it was 20-12.

The Mavericks fought back and consumed 19 plays in their 76-yard drive. Webb and Jones alternated in the leather lugging department with Jones bulling over left tackle from two yards out for the score.

Longview took the kickoff and in three plays scored with 1:40 left to play. They drove 52 yards with Thomas getting 18 over left tackle, Rothrock five down the middle and the payoff on Thomas' beautiful 29-yard burst over left tackle. Randel's kick made it 27-18.
