LONGVIEW WINS OVER MARSHALL, TIES FOR SECOND
MARSHALL - Midnight came at 2 p.m. Thursday day for the Cinderella Marshall High School football team and the Mavericks finished the 1955 football season by being handed a 31-7 defeat at the hands of Longview.

The Lobos scored the first two times they touched the ball and from that time on it was no contest as the golden chariot which the Mavs had ridden to stardom after a slow start this season turned back to a pumpkin and the Cinderella team found the Lobos too much to handle.

Longview led in all departments of the statistics except passing, where the Mavericks had a decided edge as three Mav passers completed eight passes for 79 yards including the only Marshall touchdown.

The Mavs were able to pick up only 67 yards rushing, however, and never got the ground offense off the ground.

Lobo defenders appeared out of no where to half the running of Hobo Jones, who has been the big cog in recent Maverick victories, with only short gains but Jones went to the air with three completed passes and tossed a 27-yard aerial to Bobby Clark for the first touchdown pass of his career.

Joe Hudson of Marshall and Dub Thomas of Longview were removed from the game early in the fourth period by officials and Morris Elder, Marshall guard, followed later in the same period. Glen Liston, stellar Maverick quarterback, was injured during the final stanza and was replaced at quarterback by Clark.

The Lobos scored in every period except the third while holding coach Keith Ranspot's battling but outgunned Mavs scoreless until the third period.

Marshal did not pick up a first down until the final series of the first period except for one garnered on a play on which the ball was lost on a fumble.

Longview took the opening kickoff and promptly marched 62 yards to pay dirt in 14 plays. Thomas went over right guard for the final three yards after Jerry Crawford had set up the tally with a 17-yard run over left tackle from his quarterback slot.

Marvel Byrd attempted the kick but it sailed wide and Longview had a 6-0 lead.

Two plays after receiving the return kickoff, the Mavericks lost the ball on a fumble at the Marshall 42-yard stripe and Tony Rothrock went around left end on a wide pitchout and sailed to pay dirt with the second touchdown within less than two minutes. Rob Cashell tried the point but failed.

The Mavericks had their goal line threatened again early in the second period but held for downs. The locals were forced to punt and after each team punted again Rob Cashell gathered in a boot on the 32-yard stripe and went the route down the left sideline behind beautiful blocking.

The teams played on even terms in the third period as each squad was able to pick up only a single first down. Penalties married play throughout the period as there was a total of 60 yards in penalties stepped off during the 12 minutes.

Longview opened the fourth period with the ball on Marshall's 28-yard stripe for a fruit down and four plays later Crawford sneaked over from a yard out. Again the kick failed as Norman Tutt became the third kick to try and chalk up an extra point.

The Mavericks then started their only drive of the day as Liston returned the kickoff to the 41, Jones picked up two yards, Clark lost one and a pass from Liston to Duke with a pitchout to Jones was good for a first down. William Barton picked up three and Liston hit Jim Carmichael with a short pass to the 40-yard stripe. Liston tossed to Barton on the 12 and after a short gain, a loss and a 15-yard penalty, Jones heaved one to Clark for the touchdown. Jones plunged over with the point.

An onside kick attempt failed and Longview took over at the 47 yard line of Marshall. The Mavs held for downs on the 26-yard stripe but after two incomplete passes Clark complete done to Carmichael and the big end was unable to hang onto the ball as he was hit. Longview recovered and after three plays Cashell notched his second touchdown of the day.

It left the Mavericks in fifth place in district 4-AAA behind Texarkana in first and a three-way tie for second with Longview, Lufkin and Kilgore all sporting 3-2 record. The Mav record of 2-2-1 leaves them only a game out of first but in fifth place ahead of Nacogdoches.
