LOBOS DEFEAT MARSHALL, 22-7, FOR FIRST DISTRICT WIN
LONGVIEW - Longview's Lobos, playing a cautious game themselves and harried at every turn by a hopeful Marshall club, darted to a early first-half lead that sent the Mavericks home talking in monotones about their 22-7 loss in Lobo Stadium Friday night.

It was Longview's first District 8-AAAA game and win, following on the heels of a five win, one loss record in non-district. For the Mavericks, it was just another loss, upping their total so far this season to a round eight.

The Lobos drew victory on a sparkling dash by quarterback Kim Flint, who slammed through center for one yard and the score; a 37-yard scamper by halfback Douglas Bruner, after he burst through a mauling line; and on a 25-yard pass play from Flint to end Mike Delatin.

Flint's long-barrelled arm again accounted for two points to halfback Ray Chancelor on a point-after pass, and Chancelor did a retake on points-after to pick up the two and rolled the score to a final 22-7 tally when he smashed over on the final touchdown.

In usual fumblitis form, the Lobos tempted fate eight times during the game and Marshall took advance of one to set a 21-yard touchdown drive in motion for the single Maverick score.

Longview's Lobos go up against a team next week noted for power. They meet Texarkana's Tigers at Texarkana in the second district tussle for themselves and the third for this Northeast Texas team. The Tigers have dropped both district games, to Tyler 22-6, and to Lufkin last night 7-6.

The Lobos took advantage of two out of three penetrations during first half play to punch out hard-won touchdowns, with Marshall's Mavericks missing on two chances after pushing deep into Longview territory.

Unleashing a variety of line plunging and pass plays, the Lobos moved over 85 yards the first time they kept the ball, picking up five first downs on the way. Shoemaker and Mobbs accounted for two first downs, with Shoemaker braking through on first try for 21 yards, a 15-yard penalty against Marshall for roughing bringing another on and a zipping 18-yard pass from halfback Ray Chancelor to end Mike DeLatin picking up still another.

Flint let fly with another pass to DeLatin ons second down from 25 yards out, and DeLatin hung on, to be knocked over the goal stripe by a hard-charging Maverick. Then Flint did a retake to pick up points by slamming one head high to Chancelor in the end zone. The scoring came with 3:25 remaining in the first quarter.

Marshall's Mavericks gave up one series of downs immediately afterward and Longview took the old pigskin on the long drive that didn't pay off. Bruner and Shoemaker took charge on ground gainers to blast 59 yards down field before a stubborn Maverick streak showed and ended the promise on Marshall's 2-yard line, the Lobos giving up on downs.

But, the Lobos were determined. Marshall fullback H.L. Daniel punted from the end zone to Longview's 40, where Mobbs was brought down on the spot. He rallied with two quick stabs and a first down, covering 15 yards to Marshall's 34-yard line. Shoemaker took over to pick up to yardage on three center drives and another first down. That set play on Marshall's 8 and only a few seconds away from a touchdown scamper from the 1-yard line by Flint after Chancelor moved it seven yards.

Flint's pass intended for Seale, missed the mark to leave the halftime clock reading at 14-0 in Longview's favor but not before the Mavericks threatened with two sustained drives which put them on the Lobo 17.

Third period play also saw the Mavericks jutting their chins as they pushed to Longview's 17 before quarterback Ronnie Lea got butterfingers and Lobo guard Jerry Earnhardt covered the fumble. Longview moved inside Marshall's 20 just once during that period and was constantly harried by the Mavericks.

Marshall's lone tally came on one of those blockbusting series loosed by the Mavericks early in the fourth quarter. They were limited to just three yards on as many downs and Daniels booted the ball 43 yards to Longview's 21. Bruner had his turn at getting limber fingers and Daniel pounced on it on Longview's 21.

Daniel moved slow but surely on short stabs to end up toting it through center for the last half yard after Longview drew a half yard penalty. Daniel's point-after kick sailed through the uprights to turn the score clock to 14-7.

Eight minutes later with only a minute and a half left, Bruner spurted through center of a pile up and scampered 37 yards to pay dirt with Daniels smack on his heels. Chancelor accounted for the points on downs to set the final score at 22-7.
