LONGVIEW COMES FROM BEHIND TO TIE ADAMSON, 6-6
LONGVIEW - A last-second scoring drive by Dallas' Adamson High Leopards fell short by one yard as Longview's battling Lobos threw up a goal line stand and salvaged a 6-6 tie against the hard charging visitors in a non-conference tangle Friday night.

Adamson connected on a 37-yard pass completion from quarterback Walter King to halfback Mike Pitman which carried to Longview's three yard mark with only ten seconds left in the game.

The Leopard's 215-pound fullback, Sonley Puckett, who was good for three or four yards each thrust throughout the game, got the ball-carrying nod, but was stopped short by the entire left side of the Lobo forward wall to end the game.

The deadline contest was a pleasing consolation for the Lobos as Adamson thoroughly trounced Coach Jim Gray's charges in all the statistics. Dallas led heavily in first downs, 19-4, yardage, 266-145, and everything else, but Longview produced when it counted most to notch the tie.

Adamson scored first in the last quarter when fullback Puckett climaxed a 75-yard drive with a four-yard spurt over left tackle for six points. Quarterback King attempted to run across the extra points but fell shy by one yard.

Top gainer in the scoring drive was a 20 yard jaunt round right end by Mike Pitman. Rest of the yardage was gained in short ground gainers.

Longview's big break came with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the game when Leopard quarterback King fumbled on his own 38 yard mark and Longview's Charles Richmond came up with the ball.

It took the Lobos six downs, which was sparked by a 31-yard pass-and-run combination from quarterback Robert Myers to sub back Charles Brightwell which carried to the two yard line, to score.

Fullback Don Petty plunged over for the score. The point after attempt failed, but the game was deadlocked and remained that way.

Both teams looked good on offense during the first half, but neither could come up with the big play as tough breaks played an important part.

Dallas looked unstoppable on the first series of plays when the Leopard took the opening kickoff and marched 45 yards in ten ground plays before Longview flashed the red light.

Dallas, trying for a scoring thrust, took to the airways and failed to leave the runaway as Longview's Jerry Clements intercepted a Ray Don Matthews pass in the Lobo end zone fora touchback.

Longview was also plagued by costly miscues in the first half, and the first one came on the Lobo's third offensive play when quarterback Myers fumbled on his own 25 yard line and Richard Morgan pounced on the slippery pigskin for Adamson.

A Leopard scoring opportunity was dampened five plays later, however, when Coach Gray's improved pass defense tightened and intercepted a King pass in the end zone. Nolan Smith did the intercepting chore for Longview and ran back out to the Lobo's 12-yard line.

Longview halfback Roddy Bland and quarterback Myers teamed late in the first quarter for the Lobos' top yardage gainer of the first half when a completed pass-and-carry play covered 22 yards.

Longview opened the second quarter by halting another Leopard drive when Don Petty intercepted a King pass, but Adamson returned the gesture seconds later when Pitman snared a stray Myers' hurling try.

Longview's top defensive play of the first half came midway in the second quarter when Adamson driving hard and steady for a tally, pushed its way to the Lobo eight yard line. Quarterback King attempted a rollout and John Owens, Longview center, jarred him loose from the ball with a bruising tackle. Bill Ewing jumped on the ball for Longview.

Late in the first half the two Class AAAA squads exchanged miscues once again when Longview's Paul Ketchum recovered a Adamson fumble, and Adamon's Pitman intercepted a Myers pass on the next play.

Neither team threatened seriously in the third quarter as the defensive warriors rose to arms and kept the score at a 0-0 deadlock going into the final stanza.

The thrilling climax to the game kept every fan glued to the stadium until the final minute.

Outstanding on the line for Longview were Bill Ewing, Dick Adams, Mike DeLatin and Emory Boring. Petty, Myers and Smith and Bland provided the big plays in the backfield, but it was newcomer Brightwell who stole the show with his beautiful catch which set up the Lobo tally.

Adamson was paced in the starring roles by halfback Pitman and fullback Puckett, who was also a defensive standout.
