LONGVIEW - Byrd's Yellow Jackets continued their unbeaten ways tonight, trampling a young Longview Lobo team, 34-0.
The Shreveporters rolled up 450 yards total offense and allowed the homeowners a scant 107. The big Jacket line completed bottled any offensive rushing attempts by the Lobos, holding them to a net of nine rushing yards. Byrd's ground corps amassed 280 yards overland and netted 20 first downs in completely dominating the contest. The Jacket passing attack came to life in the contest. Usually a running tea, the Byrd club amassed 170 yards by the air route. Bookie Schillcut, who went into the game as the state's leading triple-AAA scorer, got two touchdowns and passed for another score to lead the attack. Defensively, junior center Arnold Cannon was a bear for the visitors. The win moved the Jackets record to 3-0-0 on the year. Byrd scored with 3:30 remaining in the first stanza, moving 70 yards the first time they handled the ball. Alton Thomas barreled 35 yards for the marker. Jim Ryan added the point after to put the Jackets off and running. Field general Schillcutt added the next Byrd score in the first period also when he pushed one yard on a quarterback keep play. An attempted run for the two point conversion failed, and the period ended with the men of coach J.D. Cox in the fore, 13-0. In the second Schillcutt fired a 23-yard aerial to Thomas to make it 19-0 and Ryan converted to put the visitors ahead, 20-0 at half. Longview battled the Jackets even in the third stanza but the dam broke in the final canto. It was Schillcutt who moved one yard for the score to climax a drive and make it 26-0. Ryan kicked his third straight and Byrd led, 27-0. Bill Bush climaxed the scoring for Byrd, going over from the one. Ryan continued his string and the scoring end, 34-0, favoring the Jackets. |
