LOBOS LOSE TO MAVS, 15-12
MARSHALL - A last second come-from-behind effort by Longview's struggling Lobos narrowly missed as Marshall's Gary Alexander intercepted a pass tossed by Lobo Robert Myers in the Mav's end zone to protect the host eleven's 15-12 margin in a District 8-AAAA battle Friday night.

Longview, fighting both the Maverick defenders and the scoreboard clock, marched 68 yards in the fading minutes of play in a drive which could have given coach Jim gray's charges the victory.

Highlighting the drive were passes from Myers to end Mike DeLatin and back Jerry Clements, but it was also a pass which spelled Longview's downfall as Alexander picked off a touchdown-labeled pass and tightroped up the sideline back to Marshall's 37-yard mark with only 18 seconds left in the game.

One play later the game was over, and the host crew from Marshall held their first win of the year.

The thrilling finish to the battle was only a portion of the big show as the two teams put on a rugged exhibition in an ancient grid rivalry.

The game was evenly divided into two halves with Marshall winning the first half and Longview winning the second half, but the Mavs made their extra points and Longview didn't, so Marshall took the cake icing.

Longview's stumbling, fumbling Lobos could do nothing right during the first half and found themselves on the short end of a 15-0 score at the mid-game mark.

Neither team could generate an offensive spark during the opening seconds as the pigskin changed hands four times before the host Mavs finally opened up the floodgates.

Marshall turned on the ignition on their own 13-yard line and spotted downfield 87 yards in a sustained drive which was braked only by the double stripes. Fullback Paul Stories climaxed the drive with an 18-yard explosion up the middle for the six points. Quarterback Deacon Lewis passed to halfback gerald Thompson in the end zone for the points-after, and upstarted Marshall held an 8-0 margin. The tally came in the opening seconds of the second quarter. The scoring drive ate up 16 plays and was aided by three Longview penalties.

The Mavericks quickly rebounded from their touchdown by interception a stray Lobo pass two minutes later and running it back for a tally.

Alexander was "Johnny-On-The-Spot" for Marshall as he hauled in a Myers pass on the Lobo 29-yard and then out legged the Lobos into the end zone. Lewis split the uprights on the point-after kick to run the score up to 15-0.

Longview's offensive unit managed only 31 yards, 18 on the ground and 13 in the air, during the first half. They picked up only five first downs, two accounted for by penalties.

Marshall picked up 92 yards and eight first downs during the first half.

The Lobos roared back in the second half to take command of the situation for the remainder of the game.

Longview broke into the scoring act three plays deep in the third quarter when DeLatin blocked a Mav punt in the end zone and tackle Bill Ewing pounced on the ball in pay dirt for a Lobo tally. Fullback Don Petty's attempted run for the conversion failed, and the score stood at 15-6.

Longview scored the next time it touched the ball when Myers hit Petty in the end zone for a five yard touchdown which climaxed an 80-yard drive. The tally came in the closing 35 seconds of the third quarter.

Highlighting the scoring drive were good ground gainers by Willard Wright and Paul Ketchum. The point-after pass was completed from Myers to Wright, but was short of the necessary yardage and the score was 15-12.

Longview settled down to a defensive contest until the final drive which was cut short by the pass interception.
