LOBOS CUT REBELS WIN SKEIN, 20-0
TYLER - The Longview Lobos shattered Robert E. Lee's dreams of an undefeated season with an impressive 20-0 victory over the Rebels here Friday night in a District 8-AAAA opener for both clubs.

The two halves were in direct contrast as the two clubs, rated as question markers in the district race, battled on almost even terms in the first half but the second half was a different story as the Rebels folded and Longview gained momentum.

The Rebels entered the title with a five game win streak working and the Southsiders were starting to talk of a loop championship but the chatter died down in the second half Friday when the hefty Lobos started running over and around the punchless Rebs.

Longview was scoring only its second win of the season against four defeats to Class 4A powers.

The Rebels had their usual fighting spirit in the first half, especially in their first series of downs. Longview took the opening kickoff and picked up 30 yards before being forced to punt.

Lee took the pigskin on its own 20 and fullback Johnny Hacker alternated with halfback Chip Summers in moving the ball downfield to Longview's 14 yard line where the drive bogged down.

With a first and 10 situation on Longview's 20, Hacker picked up three and Summers added three more. Quarterback Davis Hills then attempted two aerials which missed their mark and the drive was dead. Lee was in Longview's territory only three other times but could not drive past the Lobo 46-yard stripe.

After an exchange of punts Longview posted its initial touchdown. Fullback Don Petty started on an end run but found no running room so he cut back to his left and outran six blockers to race 80 yards for the touchdown. A run for the extra points failed and the Lobos held a 6-0 margin with 9:55 remaining in the first half.

The second quarter was strictly punts and penalties for both clubs as neither offensive unit cold contend with the strong defenses.

Longview register its second touchdown with 3:35 left in the third quarter. Gifted quarterback Robert Myers tossed a 26-yard aerial to halfback John Malone who had worked his way behind Lee's defensive secondary and into the end zone. A pass for the conversion failed.

The touchdown had climaxed a 66-yard drive in 10 plays.

The Lboso covered 65 yards in 12 plays for their final touchdown of the evening. Malone again did the honors when he raced 17 yards around left end with 4:05 remaining in the game. He slipped through the arms of Johnny Hacker and Larry Langloh at the line of scrimmage and raced to the end zone with ease.

Halfback Paul Ketchum passed to Malone for two points to close out the scoring.

Except for the 80 yard run in the first half, the Rebels were in command. Lee picked up six first downs while holding the Lobos to only three. The Rebels had 46 yards rushing and 26 passing while Longview managed 110 on the ground and 20 in the air.

Longview picked up yardage at will in the second half while throwing up a strong defense again Lee's ground and air game. Longview added 11 first downs to their credit by going 84 yards on the ground and 69 through the air. Tyler Lee managed no first downs and only five yards on a pass completion.

Most of Lee's gains were erased by poor pass protection through out the tilt.
