BURLY LONGVIEW SHUTS OUT MARSHALL 22-0
LONGVIEW - Longview's burly Lobos sounded a strong warning that they're out for the district 8-AAAA title Friday night by thrashing the Marshall Mavericks, 22-0.

Packing all their scoring punch in the first half, the Lobos racked up three touchdowns and coasted in with the triumph to hand the Mavericks their first loop loss.

The win gives Longview a 2-0 district record and sets the stage for their big game at Texarkana next week. Both Texarkana and John Tyler at 1-0-1 in 8-AAAA with Marshall in fourth at 1-1. Marshall is now 2-4-1 for the season and Longview 3-4.

Devastating blocking from the huge Lobo line led a crunching ground game the lighter Mavericks couldn't contain. Utilizing wide plays for most of their yardage, the Lobos rushed for 277 yards.

So complete was their first half superiority, the Lobos had allowed Marshall only 17 rushing plays and 78 yards on the ground at the finish. Only an aerial game that licked on five of 16 passes for 107 yards enabled Marshall to move the ball. But two timely interceptions and the clock thwarted all of Marshall's scoring attempts.

The Lobos scored the first time they had the ball. After taking the kickoff, they drove 73 yards in 17 plays for a first quarter touchdown.

With John Malone, Barry Post and Hawk Clements gouging out the yardage, the Lobos stuck to the ground all the way and chalked up five first downs enroute. Clements swept right end from the Marshall on fourth down for the touchdown with 2:55 left in the period. Quarterback Robert Myers passed to Post for the two-point conversion.

Marshall couldn't go against the rugged Lobo line and quarterback Palmer Pratt kicked the Lobos back to their own 14. Monopolizing the ball, Longview took 15 plays to notch their second six-pointer.

An 18-yard pass from Myers to Clements kept the drive moving and a 14-yard aerial involving the same combination set the stage at the Marshall one. Myers kept for the touchdown at 5:08 before halftime and then flipped to his favorite target, Clements, for the PAT and a 16-0 lead.

Maverick halfback Gerald Thompson fumbled the following kickoff and halfback Moreland Rook was on it quickly to set up the Lobos' final tally at the Marshall 30. The hosts hit the end zone in six plays, with Post going over right tackle and cutting back to his left on a 17-yard scoring sprint. Myers pass for the PAT failed.

With Deacon Lewis running for 10 yards and Palmer Pratt passing 25 yards to David Thomas, the Mavs started clicking overhead just before the half. But Dena McMahon killed the threat by intercepting Lewis' pass in the Longview end zone.

The Mavericks proved tougher in the second half as, aided by penalties, they shut out the bruising hosts.

After the two teams had exchanged punts in the third quarter, Lewis ripped off consecutive first downs on quarterback keepers. But Pratt's long pass was intercepted by Jim Shillings at the Longview 20 to stifle the bid.

The Lobos then drove 79 yards to the Marshall one before the Mavs threw up a goal line stand and took over early in the fourth quarter.

Pratt kicked out to the Maverick 35 but the Lobos were knocking again before their third 15-yard penalty of the last half stopped them and Marshall took over at their own 30.

Pratt fired a quick 23-yard pass to Thompson, who made a fine catch but fumbled the ball when he was tackled, the Lobos' David Kiergan recovering.

After Longview had to punt, Marshall began one last try for a score in the final minutes. Beginning on their 27, Pratt hit Thompson with a 19-yard aerial to the Marshall 46. Lewis fired a nine yard strike to Thompson and Pratt ran 11 yards to the Lobo 35.

On the last play of the game, Lewis hurled a 31-yard pitch to Baene, who was tackled at the Longview four. It kept Longview unscored on in district.

The Mavericks host Tyler Lee Friday in their next district action.
