LONGVIEW - Longview's grid team suffered 48 minutes of misery and frustration Friday night as the Lobo footballers sputtered and fumbled throughout the entire game and was smashed by the Scotties of Dallas Highland Park, 25-0.
Five fumbles, two intercepted passes and an offensive attack which stalled after the opening minutes spelled Longview's downfall Friday. Bright spots were few and far between for the homeowners, and, with the exception of the rugged defensive work of the interior linemen and linebackers, Longview just couldn't make the grade. Longview was cute off at every turn by the Dallas crew. Nearly every Longview offensive movement was halted in its tracks. Longview failed to muster a serious scoring threat throughput the entire game as the Lobos managed to drive the ball only as far down the field as Dallas' 33 yard line. This came in the first half; in the second half Longview never got deeper than Dallas' 40 yard line. The old saying that you can't score without the ball certainly held true for the Lobos during the first half of Friday's tilt. Longview, hindered by two crucial fumbles, had possession of the pigskin for only three series during the entire first half. Longview had an opportunity to use its offense only 15 plays during the first two quarters, and it wasn't able to generate much drive during that brief period. The visiting Scotties dominated both the ball and the scoring clock to punch across a 13-0 lead by halftime. The first Dallas score came early in the second quarter when halfback Tom Rhodes climaxed a 63 yard sustained drive with a one yard scoring leap over left half. George Sanders booted the point after to give Dallas, a 7-0 lead with eight minutes remaining in the first half. The second Dallas tally came six minutes later when the Scots took advantage of a Lobo fumble to move across the double stripes. The fumble came on Longview's 13 yard mark, and the six pointer followed six plays later. Steve Harris notched the counter on a one yard blast over right tackle. This time the point after attempt failed, but Highland Park held a 13-0 margin, and this held until intermission. Longview's rugged line was strong during the first half as the interior unit put up a strong forward wall for the speedy Scot backs. The defense, led by Loyd Phillips, Moreland Rook, David Kiergan, Terry Don Phillips, Bob Wise and company, held the visitors down, but Dallas managed to sweep the ends and connect on passes for good yardage. Longview added to its troubles in the second half when the Lobos had two passes intercepted and lost another three fumbles. Highland's third touchdown was the end result fo another Longview fumble. The miscue came on Longview's 49 yard line, and the Scots were quick to use it to their advantage. A 23 yard pass from Wayne Haley to Harris and then a 32 yard run by Rhodes resulted in Dallas' next tally. The point after failed, but Highland Park had a 19-0 lead. The final Dallas touchdown came with only 13 seconds left in the game, and this touchdown also was set up by a Longview fumble. This time the fumble came on Longview's 33 yard lines and four plays later Haley connected with Russell Johnson in the end zone for the tally. The point after attempt failed but the Scots didn't really need it. The loss leaves Longview with a 1-2-1 season record, while the win leaves Highland Park with the same mark of 1-2-1. |
