LONGVIEW SLIPS BY LEE'S REBS, 12-6
LONGVIEW - Tyler's Robert E Lee Rebels experienced nothing but frustration here Friday night as the Longview Lobos snapped Lee's five-game victory steak with a 12-6 upset win before a surprising partisan Lee crowd.

Lee outgained Longview on the ground and through the air but in the all-important scoring column Longview had a touchdown margin for its big triumph in the District 8-4A opener for both clubs.

Longview got two big breaks in the hard-fought battle and cashed in on both. The previously undefeated Rebels made their share of mistakes throughout the game to help Longview along the way. The Rebs fumbled five times and lost two of those, had one pass intercepted and drew four penalties for 40 yards. It was only the third interception against Lee this year.

Coach Oz Amburg's Rebels started what looked like a sure scoring drive with six minutes left in the opening frame but it was not the Rebels' night as they turned the ball over to Longview at the 28-yard line.

Lee drove from its own 10-yard line to Longview's 27-yard line in seven plays but at that point the roof caved in on the Rebs. With a first and 10 situation on Longview's 27, Lee's quarterback started to his left on an option play and on an attempted pitchout to wingback Bob Cameron. Longview's corner linebacker Mike Tarmon broke through to steal the pigskin.

The Lobos then scrambled 78 yards untouched for a Longview touchdown with 4:07 remaining in the period. Quarterback Ken McKinley fumbled on the run for two extra points and the Lobos held a 6-0 lead.

Lee staged its second scoring drive of the night late in the second period. The Rebs drove from their own 48 to Longview's 29 before running out of downs with 1:25 left in the half.

Longview got its second big break in the fourth period a fumbled punt by Lee's safety Joe Sale and a short 13-yard punt by Donnie Gibbs.

Early in the period Longview's David Kieran booted from his own 15 to Longview's 43 where Sale fumbled the pigskin. Link Summers recovered for the Lobos. Three plays later Kieran punted to Lee's 13-yard line.

The Rebs netted two yards in three offensive tries and then Gibbs got off his short kick after taking a bad snap from center. A 15-yard penalty pushed the Lobos from Lee's 28 to Lee's 43.

McKinley picked up three yards on a keeper and then with 7:05 remaining in the game, he rolled out to his right and tossed a 40-yard sideline pass stop halfback Harold Bridges. Kiergan was cutthroat on his run for the extra points.

Gibbs connected on three straight completions to give the Rebels their lone touchdown of the night. The Rebels moved from their own 20 to pay dirt in the three plays.

Gibbs hit wingback Sammy Dawson with a 38-yard with 4:04 left on the clock, connected to end Neil Adams for a 10-yarder with 3:34 left and then lofted a high pass into the end zone and into the waiting arms of Dawson. The scoring play of 32 yards came with 2:58 left in the game. Gibbs' kick for the extra point was short.

Lee had the pigskin with 1:28 left in the game but two passes went wild and a pair of running plays were stopped cold.
