LONGVIEW - The W. W. Samuell Spartans from Big D mustered every weapon in their football arsenal and hurled them against Longview's Lobo.
Meager as they seemed to a subdued crowd of 7,500, they were sufficient to the task, as the Spartans nailed their first victory of the new season, 20-0, in a non-district game here Friday night.
The Spartan fans, who had been sitting quietly during most of the first quarter, came to their feet early in the second quarter when halfback Jimmy Johnson blitzed 18 yards for a touchdown with 6:39 left on the clock. The Spartans' kicking specialist, Eddie Newton, kicked the ball through the crossbars to make it 7-0.
The Spartans rallied again in the third quarter when quarterback Albert Cartledge sent a bullet pass to halfback Johnson in the end zone for a 15-yard scoring play. The extra point try by Newton failed.
The third touchdown came after end Gregg Brown intercepted a pass from Longview's quarterback, James Street, in the fourth period with 53 seconds to go in the game and returned it 25 yards to set up the touchdown. It took only 10 seconds and three plays, as quarterback Glen Hill sailed the pigskin 5 yards to end Larry Pierce to score the final touchdown. Tom Johnson kicked the extra point.
