LOBOS SWAT MESQUITE'S SKEETERS, 34-20
MESQUITE - It took the Longview Lobos several nights of searching to find it, but that night they have been looking for is called Oct. 4. They celebrated the discovery with a 34-20 flogging over the Mesquite Skeeters here as 5,000 specters watched on.

Quarterback James Street, starting for the first time, was standing right in the middle of every Lobo scoring attack. He will letter.

The Lobos nailed down the decision when field general Street dived over from the two-yard stripe to break a 20-20 tie and the Lobos went ahead to win the contest. Longview kicking specialist Ronald Cook's boot failed and the Lobos settled for a 26-20 score with the clock reading 11:56 in the fourth period.

The drive for the touchdown started on Mesquite's 42-yard line. The Lobos on the very first play, saw Street go to the airways and hit halfback Harold Bridges with a pass to the five-yard line. The pass was good for 36 yards. Three plays later, the Lobos scored.

The last touchdown of the night was a good insurance policy for the Lobos as Longview signal caller Street started the touchdown scoring machine going on their own 39-yard line with four minutes remaining in the game.

Ball carrier Street toted the ball 11 times and fullback Glenn Cobb saw action only twice with the pigskin. A big help came when the Skeeters were given two 15-yard penalties for personal fouls.

The Lobos were on the one-yard line with 1:02 to go in the contest when Street jumped high overall several Skeeters who were trying to bite at the Lobos legs. The Skeeters failed and the Lobos won.

Street sent a bullet through the airways to halfback Bridges in the end zone for the 2-pointer and the Longview fans cheered for glory, 34-20.

Halfback Gerald Carney sprinted 56 yards in the first quarter for the Skeeters' first touchdown of the night, from their own 44-yard line with 7:56 remaining on the clock. Carney slashed over for the 2-point to make it 8-0.

After the kickoff and three first downs, the Lobos put their first 6-point on the scoreboard as field general Street went over from the three-yard line. The extra point failed as fullback Glenn Cobb was hit hard by a great host of Skeeters and fumbled the ball in trying to plow over the middle of the line.

Halfback Rusty Musser, on a punt return, went down the right side of the green turf for the Lobos' second touchdown. His race was good for 54 yards. Punter Arved Von Zurmuehlen, kicking specialist for the Skeeters, was nearly in the end zone when he booted on the fourth down for Mesquite and Musser returned the punt.

Street passed to halfback Musser in the right end zone for the 2-pointer to make the score read 14-8 with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Fullback Randy Morphew intercepted a pass from Mesquite quarterback Larry Hullett and sprinted 40 yards for the touchdown with 11:50 on the clock in the second period to make the score 20-8 in favor of the Lobos. Point after touchdown failed.

Halfback Gerald Carney went over from the three-yard stripe for Mesquite's second touchdown with 4:35 remaining in the second period. The run failed for the extra point and they settled for a 20-14 score.

Quarterback Hullett passed to Gary Baker for the touchdown that tied the game up at 20-20. Baker caught the bullet pass on the 20 and dashed across the goal line for the 6-pointer. The kick for the extra point was blocked.

Top ball carriers for the Lobos were James Street, who carried the ball 16 times for 65 yards; fullback Glenn Cobb was given the ball 11 times for 49 yards; Halfback Don Morris toted the ball six times for 21 yards and halfback Rusty Musser was given the ball five times for 19 yards.

Outstanding defensive players for the Lobos were Jim Presley, Richard Rossow and Pat Lindsey.
