CARNEY'S TOE IS MARGIN FOR MESQUITE
LONGVIEW - Halfback Gerald Carney of Mesquite nailed the coffin shut with a 27-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter Friday night to beat the Longview Lobos, 3-0, as 7,000-plus fans looked on.

It was Mesquite's first win of the season after three loses and the first loss for the Lobos in four games.

Quarterback James Street of Longview, fumbled on the 43-yard line of Mesquite with 9:01 remaining in the contest. Scrappy tackle Mike Tigert fell on the ball on the 41.

It took the Skeeters four first downs to be in range for a field goal. Halfback Jack Williams, halfback David Shipley and fullback Gerald Carney were credited with big gains on the march to the 17-yard line.

It was fourth down and five yards-to-go for a first down. So the Skeeters voted to allow Carney to try his golden toe as quarterback Larry Hullett held. The ball was booted at an angel from the left side of the tedium floor. With 5:04 left in the game, the Skeeters had put the frosting on their victory.

The first half was scoreless for both. The Lobos recorded 37 offensive plays, and the Skeeters only 25. Longview had 12 first downs and the Mesquite winners compiled only four.

The third quarter saw the Lobos on the 10-yard line of the Skeeters with 7:17 on the clock and halfback Ronald Cook tried a 20-yard field goal, but the Skeeters blocked the kick.
