LOBOS OVERPOWER DALLAS ADAMSON, 21-7
LONGVIEW - In a wild, eye-throbbing thriller that left 5,000-plus fans limp, inspired Longview displayed some unbelievable offensive fireworks and blew down Dallas W.H. Adams's Leopards, 21 to 7, here Friday night in Lobo Stadium.

It was the second straight victory for the Lobos and the second defeat for the Big D boys. The Lobos beat Waco High's Tigers in the season opener, 10 to 0.

Longview's passing attack, largely ineffective much of the time, struck like lightning for one touchdown to give the Lobos a 14 to 0 halftime lead.

AS far as quarterback are concerned, Dallas reminded you of a woman trying to pick out an Easter hat. But Longview had made up its mind a long time ago.

In their hearts they know that James Street is one of the finest quarterbacks in the Lone Star State. So do all the fans, who discovered Friday night that Coach Ty Rain's senior product is as good as ever. Maybe better.

Using sheer manpower and blazing speed, Longview capitalized on big break sot batter error-prone Adamson. The Leopards looked a lot like a pro team that plays in Dallas on weekends. Two fine quarterbacks - Jimmy Ross and Billy Collins - they had very poor receivers.

The two field generals from Dallas attempted 22 passes and completed seven for 71 yards. Street attempted 18 and completed seven.

Longview's defense at times was great and then it would let up and allowed the Leopards to move at will. Players like Gary Muller, Mike Maberry, Skippy Archer, Glenn Skinner, Dusty Pitting, Clarence Harper, James Street and Danny Bogue played an excellent game.

The football gods, who gave benignly upon coach Ty Bain, gave him mostly disapproving looks for several minutes Friday night. Then they laughed out loud as the stuttering, sputtering Lobos regrouped into their normal smooth-functioning quick hitting cohesiveness and slashed the Dallas boys down like a weed cutter.

Wingback Cecil Newton, 154-pound junior, as great in his punting for the Lobos. Many, many times his punts were nearly blocked. But he had a lucky night against the Dallas lads.

Adamson won the toss and elected to receive. Keith Parker footed the ball and deep back Jimmy Ross took the pigskin on the 15 and returned to the 31 before he was snowed by a great host of Lobos.

Seven plays later the Dallas club was forced to punt. Rowdy Bearden booted the ball out and it rolled to the Lobo 21 yard line.

Longview took over with quarterback Street barking the signals. Fullback Larry Gregg started to move and was grounded for no gain. He carried again for one yard. Then Street on a keeper took off and was pushed back by the powerful Leopards to the 19. It was fourth down and 12 for a first down. Coach Bain elected to allow Cecil Newton to punt the ball out. On a bad snap from center Terry Ledbetter, Newton just had time to get the ball off his right shoeless foot. When the ball hit the ground, several of the Leopards rushed for the ball and about that time big co-captain Mike Maberry took over. He pushed the Leopards out of the way and fell on the pigskin on Dallas' 36-yard line.

Street moved the ball to the 31 yard line. And again he plowed to the 29. Street's pass to Ronnie Bagley was incomplete. However, a 15 yard penalty was charged against the Lobos and moved the ball back to the 44 yard line of Adamson.

On the next play Street hit strongish end Mike Maberry for a five yard pass to the 39. Then fancy stepper wingback Ronnie Bagley sprinted out to the left side and went to the 13 yard line for a 26 yard gainer before he was grounded.

Street took the snake and turned to his left and set sails to the goal line pushing two would-be tacklers out of the way for the six points with 3:46 left in the first quarter. Keith Parker's extra point was good, 7 to 0.

Longview's second touchdown came so easy. Halfback Glen Hensly fumbled the pigskin on the 12 yard line of Adamson and was recovered by a host of Lobos with 3:43 to go before halftime.

Three plays later, Street hit end Mike Maberry in the right end zone for a touchdown that covered 10 yards with 2:12 on the clock. Parker's kick was good, 14-0 Longview.

Prior to Hensly's fumble, Longview was moving the ball real well in the air until Street sent a bullet in the air that was intercepted by defensive back Bill Collins on the Dallas six yard line. The pass was marked for Cecil Newton.

Adams took over and halfback Charles Bowling carried to the eight yard line. Then Hensley fumbled and the Lobos took over to set up the second touchdown.

Adamson marched 62 yards for its only touchdown of the night. Quarterback Jimmy Ross plowed over right end from the four for the six pointer. Donnie Young booted the extra point with 2:39 left in the third period. ,p> With 23 seconds left in the game, Street went over from the three yard line for the final touchdown and Parker's kick was good.

The final touchdown came about as easy as eating ice cream. Roddy Bearden went back to kick on fourth down with 13 yards to go for a first. He received a bad snap from center and the ball fell from his hands. Big Keith Bishop of Longview fell on the seven yard marker with 1:30 on the clock.
