LEE GAINS WILD VICTORY FROM LOBOS, 21-20
TYLER - In a wild-eyed throbbing thriller that left 4,000 plus fans limp, inspired Tyler Lee's Rebels rushed from behind with 1:42 reading on the clock with some unbelievable offensive fireworks and blew down highly favored Longview, 21 to 20, here Friday night in Rose Stadium.

The over-coat weather crowd saw the Lobos take a lead, 20 to 14, on an excellent drive directed by quarterback James Street and some fine ball catching on the part of weakside end Cecil Newton, strongside end Mike Maberry and fullback Larry Gregg. The drive covered 71 yards. The Lobos were trailing 14 to 12 with 4:21 on the clock. When Street hit Newton with a 37 yard bomb from the 42 yard line of Tyler Lee to the five it nearly shocked the Rebels out of the stands. On the next play, tailback Skippy Archver sprinted around his right side on a handoff from Street for a touchdown. Street passed to Maberry for the two pointer for the 20 to 14 lead.

If any Lobo fan left the game at this stage of the contest, let's tell you the Lobos didn't win.

The Rebels, charging fiercely back from the rim of despairing defeat showed the Lobos they have a powerful passing and running game.

From the 44 of Lee, the Tyler club started moving as if a giant killer was after them. Quarterback Hal Cameron on the first play went to the air. His pass fell short of his receiver with 1:26 on the clock. The ace field general passed again and this time it fell short. It was third and 10 needed for a first down. Quarterback Dean Bailey entered the game and sailed the ball into the arms of end Tommy Burkett to the Lobo 43 yard line for a gain of 13 yards. With 1:09 left in the game, the Rebel fans were all standing waving the ole Rebel flags.

Quarterback Cameron reentered the game and this time he passed again. The ball fell short. Quarterback Bailey on the next play fumbled the ball. However, he recovered it for a loss of four yards. It was third and 14 when quarterback Cameron took charge and passed to fancy Stepper fullback Larry Tunnell to the 28 yard line for a gain of 19 yards with 41 seconds on the clock.

Quarterback Cameron hit end Burkett from the eight yard line for the first six points of the game. Bobby Henry came through for the extra point to give Tyler a 7 to 0 first quarter lead.

Lee Burch kicked off after the touchdown and halfback Rodney Hill took the ball on the 15 and returned to the 24. Four plays later Street fumbled the ball and John Brown of Tyler Lee recovered on the 38 yard line of Longview.

Lee took over on the 38 yard line and eight plays later the Rebels were stopped on fourth down on the Lobo 14 yard line by some outstanding defensive play by Street, Stan Bobo and Skippy Archver.

On the 14 yard line with 2:43 on the clock in the first period, Longview started moving the ball. On the first try, Street was stopped for no gain. Then on the second try, Street sailed to the left side for a gain of six. On the next play, Lee was given a five yard penalty for offsides. From the 25 yard line, Street took the snap from center Chad Barnwell. He rolled to his right and with good team blocking Street sailed 75 yards for a touchdown dancing along the right side chalk line. He had some personal body guards by the names of Barnwell, Mike McMahon and David Majors that opened his way to the goal line. Parker's kick for the extra point failed. Lee 7, Lobos 6.

Halfback Tunnell scored the Lee second touchdown with 3:42 to go in the second period when he plowed over from the two yard line. Henry kick was good, 14 to 6.

In the third period the Lobos looked like champions as they took the kickoff and moved from the Lobo 43 to the goal line fro six points, 14 to 12. The drive was the work of tailback Skipper Archver. This lad turned in one of the finest jobs of the year. He carried on runs of 6, 4, 7, 5, 3 and 7 to aid in the scoring. Wingback Ronnie Bagley from the nine yard line went in for the score. Street's pass for the two pointer was caught by end Cecil Newton out of bounds.

Longview's leading ball carrier was Street with 79 yards and top pass receiver was Cecil Newton with three for 59 yards.

A big pat-on-the back must by given to the fine playing of Rodney Mitchell, Mike Maberry, Keith Bishop, Mike McMahon, Stan Bobo, Gary Muller, Street, Bagley, Archer, Gregg and a great list of other fine Lobos.

The Lobos nearly re-wrote the chapter of the Houston Smiley game. It was 4:26 on the clock when the Lobos started the drive and scored the winning touchdown to beat the Houston club, 13 to 8. However, Here Friday night the clock read 4:21. The Lobos put on an excellent showing. Their hustle was great. Don't unrate the Tyler Lee team any. They are truly great. Fine backfield and a very strong line.

From the 19, Cameron hit Tunnell at the nine yard line for a gain of 19 yards with 33 seconds left. The Lobo defensive unit yelled to hit harder. However, on the next play, Quarterback Cameron sailed the ball into the arms of halfback Thomas Clyde to the one yard line with 14 seconds left. It was second down and one yard for a touchdown. This time halfback Clyde plowed over for the touchdown with six seconds left to tie the score at 20-all. Bobby Hendry's kick for the extra point was good and the Rebels had won their first football game of the 1965 season and it was also a District 8-AAAA victory.

The victory was the first in ix tries for the Rebels this season. It was the season District 8-AAAA opener for both clubs.

This is the third straight year the Rebels have beaten the Lobos. In 1963 Tyler Lee posted a 28 to 6 win and last season Lee came through with a 22 to 14 victory.

Fans swarmed onto the field after the game like bees around honey. The two ball clubs played very good football. Longview had the chance of winning the game. However, the on-side kick may have been the turning point of the game.

Tyler Lee fans as proud of the Rebels as if they had been given a million dollars. This was the best showing this club has made all year. It is a funny thing why Lee always plays Longview the best game of the year.

Longview will play host to Marshall next Friday night in Lobo Stadium and the Rebels will entertain John Tyler in what could be a "game-of-the-week" in East Texas.

Lee won the toss of the coin and elected to receive. Keith Parker had the job of kicking off for the Lobos. From the 40 yard line, the talented bunch of Rebels moved all the way for six points. Longview's defense just couldn't stop this fired up Rebel team. The drive covered 60 yards, 13 plays and four first downs.
