LONGVIEW - Everybody knows you can't win all the time. Evan John Wayne gets killed occasionally. But Dallas Kimball's Knight were good sports about the defeat.
Wingback Sid Sistrunk isn't a Sherman tank - he just runs that way. The 175-pound Longview athlete, who is a two-year letterman, propelled the Lobos over the Knights here Friday night, 23-0, in the season opener Friday the 13th - in Lobo Stadium before a crowd of 8,000 plus fans on a fall light weather. Sistrunk, who was a big one for the Lobos last year on the district championshi team, didn't score a TD but he did carry the ball five times for a net of 69 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards and did a lot of blocking and tackling. Coach Tommy Hudspeth started with quarterback Mark Hill and within a few minutes Roland Whitehurst entered the game to bark the signals. In the final chapter junior quarterback Ronald Cibulka entered the game and turned in a few good jobs on a few plays. Hill and Whitehurst still have lots of work at quarterback but they looked mighty sharp at times. Whitehurst's running looked good at times. He attempted four boms and completed two for 19 yards. Hill went to the cool air eight times and completed five for 99 yards. The Longview fans started arriving at Lobo Stadium before 7 p.m. and by 7:45 the stadium was packed with "green". It was a great defensive show by the Lobos. Kimball made only seven first downs and the Lobos had 11. Longview compiled 167 yards rushing and Kimball 115. In the passing deparmtent, the Lobos had 119 and Kimball didn't make a yard in the air. The Lobos scored a single touchdown in the first quarter, a TD in the second and a field goal and in hte third chapter scored their final TD. Fourth period was scoreless. The Lobos started the game off on the right foot as the four captains called the flip-of-the-coin and won. Longview elected to receive. Kimball's John Rich kicked off and fullback Ray Wright took the ball on the Lobo 25 and returned to the 35 for a gain of 10. The Lobos started with quarterback hill. On the first play tailback Billy Price went to the 36 on left guard. Price tried again and was stopped. Hill then created a conference and elected to go to the air. The pass did not work. So quarterback Roland Whitehurst went into the game and punted the ball down field. The pigskin was caught by Greg Duffey on the 36 of Kimball. Halfback Mike Atnip on the first try was caught for minus three yards by alert nose guard Larry Shanks. Shanks must be given a big ay on the back for a great ball game. The scouts in the press box were very impressed with this lad. Fullback Wayne Kofnovec then toted the ball to the 3. Quarterback Mike McCain, who was a big man of the game for Kimball, went to the 45 for a gain of 10. John Ott was called upon to punt. The pigskin was caught by defensive halfback Alton Coley on the 15 and returned to the Lobo 34 before he was nailed to the turf. From the Lobo 34 the Lobos looked a lot like the "old boys of'67". Fullback Ray Wright plowed over a group of tacklers to the 38. Then wingback Sistrunk took off to the goal line and nearly made it. Howver, defensive halfback Mike Atnip caught the lad by the shoe strings and this stopped Sid on the 15 of Kimball. The Lobos fans came to their feet for a little exercise. FRom the 15 quarterback Whitehurst sailed around the right end into the end zone standing up for the touchdown with 6:36 left on the clock in the first quarter. Kicking specialist Ralph Blount missed the extra point. The ball sailed to the right of the crossbars. So the Lobos had to setle for a 6-0 lead. Blount kicked off to the Knights and the ball went into the end zone. So Kimball elected to take the ball on the 20. The Knights were unable to move the ball against Longview's top notch defense. So on fourth down and 17 needed for a first, punter Ott booted the ball down field. The ball was taken by Coley at the 48 of Longview and the fancy little runner returned the pigskin to the Kimball 42. On the first playe the Lobos were issued a 15 yard penalty. With 5:06 left in the first hcpater the Lobos started moving the pigskin. Fullback Wirght went up the middle for a gain of three. Then quarterback Whitehurst went to the air and hit Billy Price for an eight yard gainger to the 47 of Kimball. Price then went off left guard to the 43. It was fourht down and 11 needed for a first. So Whitehurst punted the ball down field. The ball hit on the head of Emory Black and Whitehurst rushed down field and recovered the ball for the Lobos. There were several Lobos that aided in the recovery. From the Kimball 35 the Lobos were in good scoring position. On the first play Whitehurst passed to wingback SidSistrunk to the 24 for a gain of 11. Then at the 24 Sistrunk fumbled the ball and Price fell on the ball for Longview for no gain. Wright plowed up the middle to the 20. Quarterback Hill entered the game and went to the left side of the line for a gain of 5. Whitehurst reentered the game and on a hand off to Price this lad went to the 11 for a first down. From the 11 the Kimball defense went to work. Price went off right tackle to nine. Then on the next play the talented back was caught by Charles GReeson for a loss of three. With third down and 12 needed for a first. Time ran out and ended the first quarter. On the 12 yard line Whitehurst elected to pass and the ball failed short of the receiver. So Coach Hudspeth elected to go for a field goal. The ball was placed at the 20 yard line and Blount's golden toe sent the ball through the up rights for a 30 yard field goal to give the Lobos a 9-0 lead with 11:47 to go in the second period. Blount, who was very impressiv ein the game and a great team leader, kicked off once again to the Knights. Halfback Dickey Morton, 161-pound sophomore, took the ball on the 12 and returned to the 30 yard line. Morton, who is a great little running back and one of Kimball's best, took a hand off from quarterback McCain went to the 35. The play looked so well and so coach Spike Harlan said run it again. This time Morton went to the Lobo 49 yard line for a gain of 16 before the Lobo deense could count. 1-2-3. From the Lobo 49 fullbakc Kofnovec plowed over the linemen to the 46. On a keeper play quarterback McCain sprinted to the 41. However a 15 yard penalty was issued against the Knights and this took the first out of the Knights. With second down and 22 needed, McCain was caught for a loss of four back to the 37 and then blood end Larry Meeks caught halfback Atnip half a sleep and fumbled the ball. Meeks recovered the ball. So the Lobo TD machine was ready to move once again. From the 35 of Kimball quarterback Whitehurst went to the air on the first play. It failed. Fullback Wright charged to the 31. So Whitehurst got a play from the head mentor. He used it. Whitehurst sailed the pigskin into the arms of weakside end Blount over the center of the line. The pass was good for a Lobo TD with 8:30 left in the second quarter. Blount caught the ball around the 20 and rushed on across the goal line for the TD standing up. Blount's extra point was good and hte Lobos had a 16-0 lead. Longview's final TD of the night came in the third quarter when fullback Ray Wright went over from the one yard line with 2:57 to go. Blount's kick was good and the Lobos had a 23-0 victory. The TD was set up when Kimball's punter Ott was forced to punt from his seven yard line. Whitehurst took the punt on the Kimball 39 and returned to 36. From the 36 Price took a hand off from Whitehurst. Howver, the Kimball team was issued a 15 yard penalty and the ball was officially placed at the 17 yard line. Price on the 17 went off left tackle to the four yard line for a gain of 13 yards. This was one of Billy's better runs of the night. It took the Lobos four plays to score. Price carried twice. On the first try he went over right guard to the three for a one yard gaibn. Again he went off right guard to the one yard line. Fullback Wright took the ball and was stopped for no gain. Then on the fourth down play the Lobos allowed Wright to try once more. This time the big and talented youngster pushed his way over right guard into the end zone. There are many Lobos that should be given a pat-on-the-back for a grand job. The defensive unit looked sharp. Nose guard Larry Shanks was a big star for the Lobos. However, he had help from anchor end Bob Gilchrist, tackle Larry Bagley, tackle Robert Robe, blood end Larry Meeks, monster man Phil Atkins, linebacker Billy Medlin, lineback Mark Friend, halfback Eddie Koon, safety Mark Hill and halfback Alton Coley. |
