LEE ROLLS LOBOS, 20-0
TYLER - The Longview Lobos received a rude awakening here Friday night at Rose Stadium. Apparently coach Tommy Hudspeth's charges spent too much time reading their press clipping and not enough time preparing for the Robert E. Lee Rebels.

As a result, the Lobos went back to Longview licking their wounds as the inspired Rebels opened District 13-AAAA play with an impressive 20-0 win.

"We just had one of those nights," said Lee coach Don Barton. "I can't say enough about our kids. They gave a good effort. They were ready. We wanted to win and win bad. It's a good feeling."

There were many heroes wearing the red and white colors of Robert E. Lee.

Quarterback Phil Brown called a masterful game, scoring once himself and passing for another. Fullback Lee Campbell, a 155-pound fullback, who proved there's a place for a little man on the football field, pounded time and time again at the larger Longview line and wound up gaining 82 yards on 20 carries. He scored the Rebel's first touchdown on a one-yard smash.

The Lobos could never get cranked up despite the running of Alton Clay, who gained 54 yards on 11 carries. Both quarterbacks, Mike Northcutt and Ronald Cibulka, had a difficult time solving the Lee defense, which picked off three passes and recovered one fumble.

Linebacker Tommy Paul was a demon all night long on defense. The 152-pound Paul was ably assisted by Wayne Thomas, Kenny Townsend, Walker Paine and cornerback Mike Lambert, who also had a good night offensively.

"We didn't want them to break on us and complete the long bomb," said Barton. "We worked on pass defense all week and it sure paid off."

After a scoreless first quarter, the Rebels moved into high gear after Paul recovered a Lobo fumble at the Longview 37. Six plays and one penalty later, Campbell hit at left guard from the one and after ark Shuttleworth converted, the scoreboard read 7-0 with 10:16 left in the period.

After holding the Lobos on downs, Brook marched the Rebels 52 yards in eight play and scored himself on a rollout off his right. He got a good block from Marcus Johnson and went into the end zone with 4:41 left in the first half. Again Shuttleworth converted and before Longview knew what was going on, the Lobos found themselves down, 14-0.

Lee's defense rose to the occasion on Longview's next possession as Charles Castaway intercepted a Cibulka pass at the Lobos' 42. Brooks began hitting Johnson with passes and Campbell and Lambert picked up valuable yardage on the ground. With 41 seconds left in the half, Lee's quarterback found Johnson with a six-yard scoring toss. This time Shuttleworth's conversion attempt was blocked by Bob Diehl, but the damage had been done and the handing writing was on the wall.

In the second half, Longview began to move the ball better, but when it got tough, the Rebels rose to the occasion. It was all over and Robert E. Lee had the last laugh as barton chalked up his first victory in five tries as the Rebels' mentor.
