TEXARKANA GRINDS PAST LOBOS
TEXARKANA - Sadly for the Lobos of Longview, they have something in common with the Chicago Cubs as they join them in the mournful dirge: "Wait 'til next year."

Texarkana overshot the moon here Friday night, landing instead on Longview. In a trail of stardust created by fancy stepping tailback George Washington, quarterback Donny Cole and wingback Alvin Griffin, the Tigers defeated the Lobos, 23 to 8, before a crowd of around 4,000 in Lobo Stadium.

The victory for Texarkana is another big step toward the District 13-AAAA championship again this fall. The Tigers are 4-0 in loop play and the Lobos are 1-3. So, Longview is not out of the running for the district championship. The Lobos couldn't even tie for the championship.

The Lobos will meet Marshall next Friday. Only a week ago, the Tigers defeated Marshall, 23-0, in a loop contest.

The Longview team most likely will have a new field general next week. Ronnie Davis, 171-pound junior, came in to the game with 4:19 remaining in the third period and guided the Lobos to a touchdown in the final quarter. He turned in a great job.

Tailback Washington scored two touchdowns for the Tigers. He carried the ball 27 times for 183 net yards. This was 11 more yards than the Lobos made passing and rushing. Hats off to this fine athlete. He was only tackled a few times by the Lobos.

Quarterback Cole scored Texarkana's first touchdown of the night on a two-yard run with 11:57 left in the second quarter. Cole's kick was good and the Tigers had a 7-0 lead.

The Tigers touchdown was set up when quarterback Cole, playing at defensive halfback, intercepted a pass from the arm of Lobo quarterback Ronald Cibulka at the Longview 48-yard line. From the 48, Cole passed to wingback Griffin to the 40 for a gain of eight. On the next play,t he Tigers were given a five yard penalty and the ball moved back to the 45. Two plays later, Cole on a screen pass to Griffin went to the three yard line. The pass-run play went 40 yards. Griffin dropped the ball at the three and was recovered by a Lobo. However, the officials gave the ball to the Tigers at the three. Two plays later Cole went into the end zone for the touchdown.

The Lobos missed a scoring chance in the second quarter when wingback Bobby Gilchrist fumbled the ball at the seven yard line and was recovered by Samuel Harvey. The Lobos had taken the kickoff after the Tigers scored their touchdown. Quarterback Cibulka, in nine plays, had the Lobos at the Tiger 10. Then on second down, Gilchrist fumbled the ball at the seven.

Tailback Washington scored on the second Tiger touchdown on a 56-yard run off left tackle with 4:11 left before halftime. Cole's kick was good and the Tigers had a 14-0 lead.

The touchdown was set up when Willis Green intercepted a pass from Longview's quarterback Cibulka at the 37 of Texarkana. Three plays later, Washington scored the touchdown.

Texarkana's final touchdown came in the third quarter when Washington went over from the five. Cole's extra point kick sailed to the left of the upright. The Tigers had a 20-0 lead. Texarkana took the opening kickoff and moved from their own 32-yard line for the touchdown. In nine plays and a 15-yard penalty, the Tigers scored.

Quarterback Cole kicked a 20-yard field goal with 5:45 left in the game to give the Tigers a 23-0 lead. The Tigers were stopped at the Lobo three yard line on third down, so Coach Watty Myers elected to go for the field goal.

Tailback Alton Coley, ho has been nursing an injured right knee for the past three weeks, scored the Lobo touchdown with 2:44 remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter. He went 15 yards and the final eight with his back bend and knocking Tigers around so he could go into the end zone. The two point pass for the conversion was good, 23-8. The two pointer was set up when quarterback Davis on a pitch out to Coley at the left side. Then Coley hurled the ball to the end Bill Gibson into the end zone.

Coley carried 15 times for a net of 77 yards. This younger is a champion and a great college prospect. The Lobos need a few more like this boy. He displays good leadership and a world of desire. He caught one pass for 10 yards.
