LOBOS NIP MARSHALL, 10-7
MARSHALL - It has been said by no less than Brother Dave Gardner, the last the tinny-shoe philosophers, that no one can do the same thing twice.

"You can't never do something again!," shouts the good brother. "But you can do something similar!"

Brother Dave wasn't speaking of football. the Longview Lobos used a field goal in the 1969 game played here in Maverick Stadium to beat the Marshall Mavericks, 17 to 16. Well it was a field goal that won the game here Friday night, 10 to 7, before a crowd of less than 3,000 on a hot October 1st.

The victory was a District 14-AAAA opener for Longview and their second win of the 1971 season. Longview is now 2-1-1 and Marshall is 1-3-0.

With 6:36 remaining in the game, with the contest tied at 7-7, Longview elected to go for a field goal from the 13 yard line. The ball was placed at the 19 and quarterback Jeb Blount booted the ball through the uprights for a 29-yard field goal.It was his first of the 1971 season.

Longview's first touchdown of the night was scored by quarterback Blount on a one yard dive over right guard with two minutes remaining on the clock in the first quarter. Mike Mock kicked the extra point, 7 to 0.

The touchdown was set up when the Lobos took over on their own 13 yard line and marched 87 yards for the core. Prior to the Lobos taking the ball, the Marshall team was knocking at the Longview goal line door. On a fourth down and four need for a first at the 13, quarterback Rick Smart went to the air and found fullback Robert Christmas in the end zone. Robert caught the ball out of bounds, according to the officials. So, Longview took over at the 13.

Blount on the first try from the 13 went to the Lobo 31. Bobby Hunter and James Williams helped in the drive. Blount hit end Aaron Davis on a 12 yard pass from the Marshall 38 to the 26 for a first down.Marshall was given a 15 yard penalty and moved the ball to the Marshall 13. Four plays later Blount went into the end zone for the touchdown.

Tailback Lonnie Pugh scored Marshall's lone touchdown from the one line yard over left guard with 3:42 left in the third quarter. Smith added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

Both clubs made a world of errors. However, Longview's defensive unit came alive when needed. They showed they were champions in the closing minutes of the contest when they held Marshall four downs from scoring at the three yard line. With 3:27 remaining in the game, Marshall recovered a fumble at the Lobo 23 yard line by Darrell Russell when fullback James Williams fumbled the old ball.

Quarterback Smart took the snap on the first play from 23 and sailed around his left end to the 14 for a gain of nine. Tailback Perry Wilson went to the 10 for a first down. Tailback Lonnie Pugh went to the nine; Smart to the four; Pugh to the three; and then on fourth and three, Smart went to his right side of the line and was stopped for no gain by a host of Lobos. With 54 seconds left in the game the Lobos took over.

Back in the 1969 contest it was Jimmie Hill, who is now in the U.S. Navy, kicked a 27-yard field goal to give Longview a 17 to 16 victory. This game started Longview's winning streak. The streak was stopped by Palestine last year, 7 to 6. Longview went into the Palestine game with a 10-game winning streak.
