LOBOS DEFEAT LUFKIN, RUN STRING TO 10-0-0
LONGVIEW - It was been said by no less than Brother Dave Gardner, the last of the tennyshoe philosophers, that no one can do the same thing twice.

"You can't ever do something again!" shouts the good brother. "But you can do something similar." Brother Dave wasn't speaking of Longview High's football teams. The Lobos of 1937, 1967, 1972 posted 10-0-0 regular season records.

The unbeaten and untied Longview team complete the preliminary part of its 1972 schedule ripping Lufkin here Friday night, 21-6, in a District 14-AAAA contest before a home town crowd in Lobo Stadium.

The victory was good enough for the Lobos to win the District 14-AAAA crown outright and a berth in the state AAAA playoffs.

Preliminary? That's right, it's over. The next step for the Lobos will be the AAAA bi-district playoffs.

The Lobos will meet Plano Friday night, Nov. 24 in a bi-district AAAA playoff game and the game may be played in the Dallas Cotton Bowl. The Plano team defeated Richardson, 14 to 6, at Plano Friday night. Plano will carry a 9-1-1 season record against the Lobos of Coach Clint Humphreys.

The Lufkin and Longview high bands presented a great halftime show that was appreciated by the fans. A light rain fell during the halftime but it didn't stop their fine show.

The Lobos started the first half off like they were dreaming of Plano or Richardson. However, Lufkin's Panthers quickly brought the Lobos back down on the playing field. Lufkin went into the dressing room at halftime, leading 6 to 0.

Halftime Tommy Ash scored for the Panthers in the second quarter on a 14-yard run over the left side of the Lobo line with 4:35 left on the clock before the colorful halftime show. Bobby Harrison missed the extra point. However, the Panthers had a 6 to 0 lead. The drive started on the Panther 34-yard line and in 10 plays the Panthers scored. Big gainers were made by Steve Day and Matthews Ayres.

The Lobos took over the ball in the third quarter at their own 21-yard line after fielding a punt off the toe of David Hearne. On the first play Lufkin was issued a five yard penalty and this was the big spark for the Lobos. On the second play Coverson Bush dashed from the 27 to the 48 of the Lobos for a gain of 21 yards and the Lobos were moving.

Fullback Larry Harkless took a pitchout from quarterback Cecil Walton and sprinted to the 36 of Lufkin for a gain of 12 yards. Chuck Boyd carried for two on the next try and Walton for 10. Three plays later quarterback Walton hit end Charles Chumley on a 13-yard bomb, to the 10-yard line.

With first down at the 10, two plays later tailback Chuck Boyd plowed over from the three for the touchdown with 4:42 togo in the third quarter to tie the game.Mike Mock came through with his educated toe and gave the Lobos a 7 to 6 lead. The drive covered 79 yards in 11 plays and the Lobos looked mighty great.

With 1:03 left in the third quarter, the Lobos once again took over the ball. This time the touchdown was set up when linebacker Danny Majors intercepted a pass from quarterback Austin Chapman at the Lufkin 26-yard line. Five plays later tailback Chuck Boyd went into the end zone for the Lobo touchdown. Mock's kick was good and the Lobos had a 14 to 6 lead.

Longview's third touchdown of the night was also set up by a pass interception. This time linebacker Larry Wilkins intercepted the pass from Lufkin quarterback Chapman at the Lufkin 23-yard line with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter. Five plays later fullback Larry Harkless went over into the end zone for the touchdown from two yards out. Mock kicks the extra point and the Lobos had a 21 to 6 victory. Harkless carried the ball 7, 8, 2, 2 and 2 yards for the 23 yards.

The Lobos defensive unit must again be given a pat-on-the-back for a great job in stopping the Panthers. With 25 seconds left in the first quarter the Lobo defensive unit held Lufkin at the one yard line on a fourth down play. The trio at linebackers MikeMock, Danny Majors and Larry Wilkins did their thing.

Lufkin finished the 1972 season with a 6-4-0 record and a 4-3-0 district mark. Lufkin in a poll was picked to finished second in district. Several college scouts were in the press box to look over several of the fine athletes on both teams.

Details on the bi-district game will be published in Sunday's edition.
