JOHN TYLER THUMPS LONGVIEW
LONGVIEW - John Tyler quarterback Demarcus Baxter slipped and slithered for 169 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark for the season as the Lions broke a five-year drought with a 39-12 District 14-AAAA triumph over Longview here Friday night before a near-capacity crowd.

It is the first time since 1973 the Lions have managed to overcome Longview on the gridiron, and it is the most points that have been scored on the Lobos since the fourth game of the 1965 season.

John Tyler coach Bob Finklea, who took over the reins at John Tyler in 1974, had never beaten Longview and when he finally got a chance, he wanted the victory to be as big as possible as he left his starters in the entire way and tried two bombs with less than a minute left trying to run the score up even more.

A spunky Longview outfit managed to keep John Tyler out of the end zone until there were only 23 seconds left in the first period when stellar tailback Floyd Dorsey swept around right end and scored untouched from 35 yards away. Johnny Speake added the extra point.

Dorsey finished with 128 yards on the night in 20 carries, the same amount of times Baxter carried the ball. Baxter ran his season total of 1,107, Dorsey now has 1,413.

John Tyler took over at Longview's 49 after the Lobos' ensuing possession and promptly drove the distance in nine plays, with Baxter getting the final nine on a sweep around right end. Speake's PAT attempt was off to the right.

Longview's offense, which had been held to only 26 yards when the Lobos took the ball over at their own 19 with just 50 seconds remaining in the first half, promptly used the passing arm of Victor McGee to drive down the field in five plays and score as time ran out.

The big gainer in the drive was a 28-yard pass to tight end Mack Faggett, and then McGee rolled out to his left as the timer ran out and found Faggett just across the goal line for the touchdown.

For all intents and purposes, however, John Tyler put the game away on the second half kickoff when Jerry Williams returned the kickoff 57 yards to the Longview 33. Three plays later, fullback Ricky Combs scored from the 22 as John Tyler went up, 27-6, after Baxter added the two-point conversion.

On their next series, the Lions went 60 yards in six plays, with Baxter scoring from the 10 after fumbling the snap, picking it up and scooting around right end untouched with 6:33 left in the third period.

Longview's season finale next week will find the Lobos meeting cross-town rival Pine Tree for the first time ever in the history of the two schools. The game will be played in Pirate Stadium.
