LOBOS NAB THIRD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT WIN
TYLER - After clinging to a 7-0 halftime lead, the Longview Lobos continued to roll past 14-AAAAA competition as the Lobos made Tyler Lee their third district victim with a 24-0 victory here Saturday night.

The Lobos scored six points in the third quarter and added 11 more in the final period to post their third consecutive shutout. Longview has now outscored 14-AAAAA rivals, 76-0.

Longview continued to play sluggishly on offense as the Lobos were forced to punt away on their first offensive series in the second half. But the Red Raiders continued to have their own problems and the Lobos regained possession of the ball at their own 47 yard line.

Gahlen Johnson, who was to gain 126 yards on 14 carries, started off the eight-play scoring drive with a two-yard pickup. Johnson gained six more yards, but the big play was yet to come. Kyle Jones hit Nathan Harris with a 20-yard pass completion to put the ball on the Lee 26-yard line. Johnson then romped 22 more yards giving him 32 in the drive and Longview was on the Lee three.

Clifford Ward ran two yards, but was stopped short of the goal line. Ward attempted to ram his way into the end zone, but picked up no yardage on the next play. This time the call went to Ronnie Hunter who plowed his way in. The two-point conversion failed as the Lobos went ahead 13-0 with 3:10 remaining in the third quarter. Neither team mounted any further scorn threats and after three periods Longview led 13-0.

The Lobos continued their successful running game as Johnson got the call on the first play following another sputtering of the Lee offense. Johnson snuck by the Red Raiders defense, only to be forced out of bounds by a diving Allen Dunwoody. On the very next play, Johnson carried the ball and raced into the end zone from four yards out. Jones connected with Bobby Daniels for the two-point conversion as the Lobos now led 21-0 with 6:46 remaining in the game.

The Lobos close out their scoring when Michael Rosborough booted a 33-yard field goal with 3:24 to go in the game. The play was set u when Longview players broke through the Lee offensive line and blocked a punt. Longview had possession one the Red Raider 15-yard line. Again Johnson gained seven yards on a run and moved the ball forward, but two successive running-play losses resulted in Rosborough's field goal.

It was the Lobo defense which helped Longview retain the lead before breaking the game open in the second half. Tyler Lee registered seven first downs in the game and lost one fumble while being intercepted twice. Lee's quarterbacks connected on just two of seven passes for 17 yards. And the Lee rushing game gained 141 yards. In the two other district wins this season, Longview allowed Nacogdoches just 42 yards total offense and Lufkin 170 yards.

It was a tight first half as only seven points were put on the board. Fortunately for the Lobo fans, Longview did the scoring.

After both squads were slowed up on the running game, the Lobos moved the ball and scored in the second quarter.

Tommy Nichols aided the Red Raiders by placing the Lobos deep in their own territory with punts. Nichols punted four times in the half.
