| LONGVIEW - A lesson to be learned: don't anger Longview's "Mean Green" defense.
Tyler Lee, learning the hard way, scored on an impressive 75-yard drive to open the game at Lobo Stadium Friday night to take an early lead. It was Lee's last impressive drive as the Lobos bounced bad with a 26-7 triumph, their sixth straight this season and third straight in District 14-AAAAA play to keep them in a three-way tie for the top spot with Marshall and John Tyler. Ronnie Hunter bulled his way for a pair of touchdowns and Kenny Frazier connected with Donnie Centers for a score and netted another on a nifty 20-yard run to pace the offense, which was given excellent field position by their defensive counterparts for two of the touchdowns. But it was the "Mean Green" which bore down, after the Red Raiders' insult, and paved a smooth road to the win. Lee's score, a one-yard over-the-line dive by Ricky Barnes with 5:37 left in the first period, was the first points surrendered in district action by the Lobo defense. Lee made it look almost easy, too, grinding out 75 yards on 14 plays, twice converting third-down situations. Longview came into the game riding the strength of back-to-back shuts. Lee, however, was able to net just 78 yards the rest of the game and was held to a mere 48 the second half. The Red Raiders snapped the ball just 14 times the second half, made just four first downs and lost two fumbles. THey finished the game with 153 total yards. Kyle Medlock, who had rushed for over 100 yards in each of Lee's last two games, finished with just 23 on nine attempts. With Hunter and Frazier leading the way, though, Longview pounded out 159 rushing in the second half. Hunter was the game's leading rusher with 99 yards on 19 carries and Frazier, rushing for 57 on just six carries and hitting all three of his second half passes for 38 yards, had his best night as the Longview quarterback. Longview came right back after Lee's score and Hunter capped a six-play, 59-yard march with a one-yard blast just 2:57 after the Red Raiders' touchdown. Jessie Floyd knotted the count at 7-7. Middle linebacker Duke Brooks put the Lobos in business late in the second quarter when he recovered a Reggie Scott fumble at the Lee 16. From there Hunter took advantage of a crunching block and swept right end for the go-ahead score and Floyd tacked on the extra point for a 14-7 nod. Longview opened the second 24 minutes with a 61-yard march which took only 10 plays. Frazier went over the middle 24 yards to a wide open Donnie Centers for the touchdown. Floyd's PAT was partially blocked and missed its mark but Longview now held a 20-7 lead. The margin was increased quickly when Dewayne Wooldridge recovered his second fumble in as many games, this one at the Red Raiders' 40. Frazier hit two passes for 14 yards and covered the last 20 himself for the final 26-7 tally. |
