| LONGVIEW - What's all this talk about Longview's league-leading rushing attack?
Lets hear it for the passing game! Lobo quarterback Eric Harris must have gotten a bit tired of all the hoopla over his backfield teammates. Against Marshall's Mavericks here Friday night at Lobo Stadium, Harris threw for a season-high 164 yards, including three touchdown tosses, as Longview remained undefeated in District 13-AAAAA play with a 28-12 win. The victory was Longview's seventh in a row, advancing their record to 7-1 and 5-0 in loop play. It was also the Lobos' 15th consecutive win over the Mavericks, who fall to 2-6, 1-4. Harris was nearly perfectly, completing 8 of 11 passes. Senior tight end Marlin Myers snagged four of those for 63 yards, including touchdown grabs of 5 and 36 yards. Leon Hendrix had a 47-yard touchdown grab, as well as a 31-yard catch. And wingback Charles Smith caught a pair for 23. Longview junior tailback Joe Johnson picked up 100 yards on the ground as the Lobo rushers combined for 193. Johnson scored the game's initial touchdown on Longview's opening drive, taking a draw up the middle for 52 yards and six points. Kicker Steve Blaschke also added a 45-yard field goal - his fourth of the season - with five seconds remaining before halftime, giving the Lobos a 15-6 lead. Marshall's Allen Survia, who wasn't expected to see much action due to an injury, ended up as the game's top ball carrier, picking up 105 yards on 28 carries and scoring both Maverick touchdowns on runs of 1 and 4 yards. Quarterback Ricky DeFreeze put the ball in the air 29 times, connecting for 120 yards. Survia tried a couple of halfback passes and Alphonzo Clayborn another. It seems Longview's Tarodney Robertson has a nose for the football. He played a key defensive role against Marshall, intercepting a pair of DeFreeze passes and returning them 48 yards, as well as pouncing on a Marshall fumble in the third quarter that led to a Longview touchdown. Coming through with sacks in the game were Lobo defenders John Northcutt and Derwin Moore. Marshall defensive standouts included Orestus Jackson, Rod Reed, Anthony Johnson and Don Matthews. Matthews had three sacks. With Longview leading 12-6 late in the second quarter, Marshall put together an 11-play drive down to the Lobo 15-yard line. Then on a fourth down and six call and with just 38 seconds remaining until halftime, the Mavericks elected to go for the touchdown, but missed on a DeFreeze pass. Opportunistic Longview came right back. Harris connected with Hendrix for a 31-yarder, then hit Smith along the sidelines for 9 more. A pass to Myers down the middle pushed the ball to the 30-yard line, and two plays later Blaschke was good on his 45-yard kick as time expired. In the third quarter, Robertson's fumble recovery gave the Lobos the football at their own 35. Runs by Johnson and Smith advanced the ball to the Marshall 43. Then, with the Lobos in punt formation on fourth down and four, center Derwin Moore snapped then all to blocking back Mike Buffins, who ramble 37 yards to the Marshall 7. Two plays later Myers caught his first touchdown from 5 yards out, building the Lobos lead to 22-6. In the final stanza a Longview fumble at its own 20 led to Marshall's final touchdown. A fourth down pas from DeFreeze to Survia was good for 13 yards and a Maverick first down at Longview's 7. Survia then carried three consecutive times before bulling over from the 1. Longview is tied for the District 13-AAAAA lead. |
