BALANCE LEADS LOBOS TO 31-7 WIN
TYLER - Longview's defense brought something old, while the offense brought something new. Added together, it was something impressive.

The No. 1 ranked Lobos rolled past former district rival Tyler Lee 31-7 in the finale of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at Rose Stadium on Saturday. While the Lobos didn't have a true shutout against Lee, such as last year's 21-0 win, Lee didn't score until reserve receiver Zach Hightower caught a 15-yard touchdown pass T.J. Scholler with 3:35 remaining and the game well in hand for Longview.

Longview nose tackle Bubba Vactor said his team accomplished its goal off slowing down Lee running back Da Da Brown, who had 41 yards on 10 carries. The Lobos held Lee to 212 total yards despite standout defensive end Jeremiah Farley not playing because of turf toe. Vactor credited players such as Darius Waters for filling in for Farley.

"We've seen Da Da run well in the past. He has quick feet and can get out and go," said Vactor, who had two tackles for losses. "We just worked on pounding them at the line."

Longview (2-0) extended its winning streak over Lee (0-2) to seven games with something they haven't used in recent memory: a two-quarterback system.

Starting quarterback Aaron Johnson sometimes moved to receiver and Rayshone McGee took his place, Johnson passed for 97 yards, while Rayshone McGee had 92 yards. Combined they were 13-for-19 with no interceptions.

"This was something new we put in practice this week," said Longview receiver Carey Fortson, who caught four passes for 74 yards and ran a reverse 34 yards for a touchdown. "This shows we can do other things in our offense like a spread.

"I like catching passes from both of them. They're both good passers."

Johnson led Longview on a 92-yard drive on its first drive of the second half, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Da'Cedric Hunt with 4:23 left in the third quarter. It was Hunt's second touchdown run of the game. The play was set up by a 34-yard pass from Johnson to Fortson.

Fortson had his touchdown run with 1:01 remaining. An interception by Addison McGee set up a 15-yard screen pass from Johnson to Keylon Shaw with 9:41 left to complete the Longview scoring.

Longview took a 3-0 lead on its opening drive with Kyle Jenkins making a career-long 40-yard field goal with 9:34 left in the first quarter. Lee had a chance to tie the game with 53 seconds left in the first, but holder Colby Craddock could not hold on to a snap to set up a 31-yard attempt and was tackled by McGee for a 13-yard loss

The Lobos took advantage with a 12-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a two-yard touchdown run by Hunt with 6:08 left in the second quarter to give Longview a 10-0 halftime lead. The key play of the drive was a 15-yard pass from Johnson to Fortson on a third-and-11 at the Lee 42-yard line.

Lee did improve on offense after 98 total yards in a 27-13 loss to Lufkin last week. Lee had 94 yards in the first half, 74 on passing by Luke Wagner, but Longview had a 178-94 edge. Wagner was held to 13 yards passing in the second half.

Tyler McCray led Longview with 94 yards rushing on 12 carries.

The Lobos return home to play Natchitoches (La.) Central on Friday.
